I finally had a little time to play with RC1 today. I finally got past the
Nvidia issues I had to begin with - thanks to some other comments here. I
have one of those older systems (6100 chipset on a Lenove box with
questionable ACPI) so I had black screen syndrome. Following the comments
here, I downloaded the 270.18 BETA and did the manual install as the repo
rpm refused to install due to a wierd dependency problem. Booting to level
3, I was able to run the .run program as root and it went right in. It did
detect the default noveau driver and after several warnings it took care of
the problem and completed the installation after I followed the on-screen
instructions. The result was quite good so now I can at least look at how
the rest works.
One real oddity was that after I downloaded the Nvidia file from a failsafe
boot, I couldn’t chmod the program to set the executable bit. Even logged
on as root from init level 3 the system refused to accept chmod from the
command line. Refused to acknowledge that it even existed. I set the
permission from another installation on the machine just to get it to run.
After the installation was complete, I re-booted and it booted straight to
the KDE session as my user. Now all the commands that would not work before
(like chmod) worked just as expected. Is this symptomatic of the SUID
changes?
Now for the sound problems. Seems like I’ve had a battle with video and
sound for every release since 11.1.
