Count or List of currently connected users?

What about a count or list of currently connected users?

Reason for this, is to see how busy the forum is and estimate if it will take a long time for a response, or not. Plus it can provide a link to individual’s profile and there can be indicators (bold, color, etc.) for Forum Admins so people can easily find them and PM them with issues.

I’ve seen these on other forums e.g. Fedora Forum and Ubuntu Forum both under “Current Active Users” near the bottom of the page.

Won’t help to find me. I am often loged in, but not at the system. OTOH, when I am not loged in, I still get e-mails about PMs and new posts to threads I am subscribed to.

Thus, whatever definition you give to “currently connected” it will not fit the habits of many Forums users.

Nice, but it’s TMI (too much information). I was looking for a simple list with links. Plus, having it on the front page and obvious instead of a link hidden behind two layers of menus.

correct: those who contribute via nntp would never be showed as
“currently connected” though they might be the first responder, over
and over…

Looking at it again, it also shows all the guests logged in too! So (like just recently) there are 191 people logged in, and over 9,000 guests and the list (which only shows a few on a page due to all of the extra information included) went on for like 450 +/- pages!

Not much chance to look at the overall activity.

I am not familiar with NNTP, and didn’t think of how that would impact things. Thanks for bringing that up.

A LOT!

Me, I would not participate here if I had to use the forum as a forum.
It is a great idea, despite its breakdowns, that gateway thing.

Yes, the dual forum<–>nntp access allows both types of participants to “participate” and increase
value of this user’s mutual help system

When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.
