Could not read a file (KDE/cmd)

Hi everyone,

Good Day! I am having problems with my openSUSE installation. I was trying to backup a partition to an external HD but some files failed with an error “Could not read …” like as shown below:

This also happens when I try tocopy the same file within the local hard disk. Issuing a cp in cmd generated the same problem. I also encountered occasional freezing/hanging up. Sometimes when I try to click anything, it will freeze for 5-10 minutes. When this happens, everything is delayed until I reboot my openSUSE.

I am suspecting it is a hard disk problem? Though I hope it is not.

Failing to copy a file regardless if via GUI or cmd and location (external or internal within the HD itself) is alarming. Having a linux that hangs up/lags is not good too. Something is wrong I just do not know what. It used to be ok. I hope someone can give me an idea on what I should check.

This does really sound like your hard disk has bad sectors.
Could you upload the file /var/log/messages to susepaste.org and post a link?

Hm, I don’t find anything regarding bad sectors in there.

Are you sure you have read permissions for those files? Right click on the file and select “Properties” to check.

And please try to copy one again and post the output of “dmesg” after the error.

that happened to me once…a few days later i tried to paste
something different and it worked…

i never figured out if the IP i was using that day had been
blacklisted or if the image i was trying to upload was corrupted, or
what exactly happened…(but i am sure it was not because i was
spamming anything.)

Yes I do. For cmd, I logged on as root and issued cp command but got an error in KDE saying it could not read the file. Right now, I tried to do it again and now it works. But there is still occasional lags.
