"Could not connect to host for smb://workgroup/" in openSUSE 13.2

I am running openSUSE 13.2 with KDE on top.

When I navigate to the network in Dolphin, I go into Samba Shares and see 2 groups (Workgroup and Seagategroup for my Seagate GoFlex network drive). Whichever group I try to go into, I get the error message “Could not connect to host for smb://workgroup/”.

If I put the IP address in the navigation bar (smb://10.0.0.50) then the shared folders on the network drive shows up and I have no further problems.

I have opened up the Firewall for Samba-client already.

Networking is not my friend.

How do I get the shared locations and systems listed when I go into the Samba shared? This works in my other operating systems (Ubuntu Linux and Microsoft Windows 7) currently, so I am sure that the network drive is working properly.

Oh, and I added ‘wins’ to the ‘nsswitch.conf’ file as mentioned as the solution for this thread. It still doesn’t show but I am going to try rebooting and see if that fixes anything.

Hi dragonbite. Maybe you should also review this guide concerning name resolution

http://swerdna.dyndns.org/susesambabrowse.html

Thanks, I didn’t run across that one.

Unfortunately I am getting a The connection has timed out error message.

It seems that swerdna’s site may be down.

Seems to be up now.

It worked once I added

name resolve order = bcast host lmhosts wins

Thanks! I’ve got to mark this down in my notes so I know to look for it when I upgrade.

Yes, I have the same configuration. You’ll find that you can remove the ‘wins’ entry in /etc/nsswitch.conf and the name resolution will stay working, since the samba client is relying on the netbios broadcast from the NAS anyway.
