Question for devs.

What are the repositories?
Why is Firefox a dependency of pattern-cosmic-basic?

Try to ask here:

https://lists.opensuse.org/archives/

@WilsonPhillips the openSUSE Maintainer is present in the Forum, see Cosmic epoch DE on Opensuse? Is there a central place for discussion?

Yes, I saw that, but it is closed. I’ll just wait till the wiki is populated.

@WilsonPhillips let’s just ping @rrahl0 to give an update

Thanks Malcolm

@rrahl0 I’m just looking for an update on the status of Cosmic DE. I do have a couple of questions.

  1. What is the address of the repository. I think I have it and it seemed to work, but I wanted to make sure before I used it.

  2. Why is firefox a dependency of pattern-cosmic-basic and will it break the install if I break the dependency and not install firefox?

Also, what is the difference between Factory and Next? Which should we be using?

Thanks @rrahl0

Beware: COSMIC DE is in alpha stage. Don’t expect too much from it right now.

@WilsonPhillips so, first sorry for the late response. I am not that active in the forums. if you want, there is a matrix channel, and you can reach me through email (rrahl0@o.o)

  1. the address of the repository depends on which “version” you want to get. X11:COSMIC:Factory holds all the stable releases for packages which are necessary to run the most basic cosmic DE. X11:COSMIC:Apps holds the same but for the “additional” applications like terminal. X11:COSMIC:Next holds unstable packages which means I/We update them more regularly in comparison to when 1.0.0 hits. (as of right now they hold both the same versions, as I was too lazy to update. but will do today, as quite a lot of stuff changed since alpha1)

  2. I added firefox, so most people can look up stuff even with just the most basic cosmic de. not everybody knows the CLI by heart. (on top of that, I still want to give the option to install an opensuse branding and upstream branding. if upstream firefox is in the default “task bar” which would otherwise look bad (on us)

  3. Right now you can use https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/COSMIC:/Next/openSUSE_Factory/ for a 1 repo has all packages repo. or split it up with https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/COSMIC:/Factory/openSUSE_Factory for just the basic packages. (If you are on Leap there is https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/COSMIC:/Backports/15.6/ for backports. (but as I am not the main user for that, I can’t guarantee how “well” it works.

Yes as COSMIC is still alpha (and I still have 1 packaging issue to figure out) don’t expect too much. at the same time other people already told me directly, or if you follow the internet for cosmic stuff, it seems to be already quite usable. (that’s why they will probably move from alpha2 to release)

Thank you so much. :slightly_smiling_face:

This looks good. It was what I had figured out on my own, but wanted some confirmation as it did not seem to have keys for the repo.

is patterns-cosmic-cosmic going to stay like an OBS forever? Or is it going to be in repo-oss at some point?

Well considering Pop!_OS 24.04 hasn’t been released yet, COSMIC can’t land in repo-oss for now.

It doesn’t play well with Plasma right now, so don’t get in a hurry for it yet. It does look nice though, but I sure do hate the GTK file manager and file picker. The QT version is so much better.

Soon. Soon.
