I’m trying to download openSUSE DVD from both direct link and torrent… Both say ISO image size is 4.3 GB, but when they download, ISO only has 3.3 GB (allthough the download seems to be complete). When i burn that ISO to DVD K3B burn tells me an error (about the file not being the right size). I burned anyway, but i can’t install. When it comes to analyzing system, it stops and says it cannot find repositories… no matter what i enter there (cd, dvd, url - both there and before installation, when i put net repoitories) it won’t find them.
Then when i abort installation, i let the installer check its integrity and it reports that it’s broken…
I downloaded openSUSE 11.2 64 bit version… Twice. Both times it didn’t work…

on how to check the md5sum of the downloaded .iso image before
trying to burn a faulty image to a disk…
and, there is info on how to get a perfect image AND disk even if
using Win…

do NOT attempt to install from a corrupt install disk…unless you
really want all on the disk trashed…you know what they say:
Garbage in, garbage out.

Do this http://tinyurl.com/yajm2aqbefore any install attempt…even
if the disk worked perfectly yesterday on one machine it might be
misread on another machine (or have a fresh fingerprint on the disk!)
btw, lots of stuff happens during an install that is not undone when
you ‘abort’…so, putting a corrupt install disk into the breech and
pulling the trigger is not the best way to proceed…

The second ISO i downloaded from torrent is also 3GB so i don’t want to waste another DVD burning it cause it’ll probably be the same…
I also downloaded KDE live CD openSUSE, so i’ll try that too, but first i’ll read all the links everyone gave me and see if i can fix the problem (or find out what the problem is actually)…
yeah i know but installation didn’t get past system analysis and since i didn’t know you could check the disk before, it was allready too late… :shame:
But now i know thanx to you so i’ll be sure to check before i install anything in the future… Last time i installed SUSE was i think 5 years ago, so i’m a bit confused now… I never had theese kind of problems before…
thx for the links, hopefully i can fix the problem i’m having and download a normal (4.3GB) ISO so i can install SUSE properly…
Hehe, thanks… Well once i got the non corrupted download, the installation is pretty straightforward… I especially like the part where i can change the default system to boot up (since i’m dual booting)… Of course it has to be windows since i’m not the only one using the computer…
There was a problem with mp3 playback (no codecs or something), but i read some topic in this forum and managed to get it working…
I think it was partitioned with windows XP cd… I don’t really know. A friend gave me this disk to use, and he had some files there so i couldn’t delete all the partitions and start over… Now it’s just mess… The partition i’m using for SUSE now was used i think for windows XP, and the “extended part” is for everything else… So i couldn’t (without deleting everything) merge extended and that 15GB primary partitions… That’s wny my whole windows are on an extended part and linux is on primary… But it’s a mess, and too many partitions… Once i clean it up and get some external disk for my data, i’ll delete everything and repartition again…
I’m not keen on some aspects of your fdisk -l output, ensuring you have a working backup is always a good idea. I am interested in knowing for sure about the partitioning tool used.

You can expect help from here if you choose to repartition or otherwise fix this.
Well the issue in this thread has been solved thx to the community.
This is more or less off topic…
And about the tool, i’m sorry, but i really can’t say for sure what partition tool was used, but i’m 90% sure it was windows XP install cd… I have no idea how that “extended” part of the partition came to be, cause whenever i made my own partitions (during XP installation which i did at least once every 2 months - yay for the system… 2 months and it’s garbage no matter what i do) i never even heard of making some part of the partition extended… And that part cannot be merged with primary (logical) part (in my case where linux now is)… For now i don’t mind this, it works without problems (emphasis on “for now”), so when i stop being lazy and clean up my disk and backup important data to an external drive, i’ll delete everything on it and all partitions, so i can set it up the way i like it…
Now the problem may occur if i’m still unable to merge everything into one chunk of “unpartitioned space” (cause that’s what happened when i tried)…
When i decide to do this, i’ll be sure to come here and ask for help.
I’d like to do that with linux partitioner (either during install or in linux) cause i really had problems with windows partitioner…
I even had a lot of trouble installing windows 7 (had to install it 3 times to fix all the BS that happened lol) because of this extended thing… But that’s another wall of very annoying text… If you wanna read it i’ll post what happened…
