How can I resolve this issue? When I attempt to login as root on my open suse 10.3 box the screen flashes and returns me back to the login screen. My password is correct. Any ideas?
Thanks for the help!

I assume this is via the GUI… can you login to the command line?
Ctrl+Alt+F2
then login with your credentials.
Do other users work? If so can you go in and then ‘su’ to ‘root’ to
clean things up?
Good luck.

hi, when i was first starting in Linux, i had gray haired old man who
used to administer an IBM Main Frame bigger than my house tell me to
never ever log into a Linux windowed session as root…EVER…NEVER EVER…
there are about a million ways to mess up your machine that way…
he said ALWAYS sign in as a regular user…and, then if you (for
example) need to do something as root, in (say) kate, kwrite, konqueror
or whatever, just open an xterminal, and type
sudo kate (for example) and then give your root password
AND do NOT forget you are running it as root…AS SOON as you are
finished with the root level work, CLOSE that thing you just opened!!!
believe it!

Totally agree Denver. I wanted to get in there to change the password of the root account. I know you can do it other ways but I really wanted to make sure you could login etc if we ever needed to etc…
Thanks for the advice!

If you need root power for a program use kdesu
gnome has an equivalent too
kdesu firefox
would open up window asking for root access and your password for firefox, as an example.
then when you are done with root privileges for the program, as was said, close the program.

A couple things… first, if you have Gnome and KDE installed and are
just using one currently perhaps try the other. Otherwise in your home
directory (la ~
) you should see several directories starting with ‘.’
that mention ‘gnome’. Try renaming these with the ‘mv’ command to
something else and then try again in case it’s a configuration issue
(likely at this point since other users work).
Good luck.
