copy file downloaded to desktop to folder

If I download a file to the desktop, it becomes ‘iconized’, which means I cannot drag this file to a folder in Dolphin. This is incredibly annoying. How can I get this file to the folder?

mv ~/Desktop/my-file ~/my-folder
[and then change the downloader (Firefox?) to point into my-folder, for future downloads.]

Is it the case that anything on the desktop is an icon?
(It looks that way to me).
If one drags a file from a folder to the desktop, and then attempts to drag it back, it cannot be done. This seems really counterintuitive and just plain bad design.

I assume you have a Gnome desktop.

All I can say is this behaviour does not happen using KDE 3.5.9

It’s not a problem to drag any file to or from the desktop.
