Copy existing Suse 11.1 setup to new new hardware

Hi Folks
I have a question and I would appreciate pointers to any useful resources.

I am running Suse 11.1 on a netbook that I would like to free up for work. Since I would like to keep the existing setup on the new machine, I was wondering if there was a process for copying an exisiting installation to new hardware. This will be a desktop system ( Cheapie PIV most likely )

Appreciate any advice…

Best Regards
Gregor

I’ve changed hardware desktop → desktop changing the HDD to another PC,
but never netbook → desktop, if you have an equal size HDD you can try
dd to copy all the netbook HDD to the desktop HDD or try G4L to clone it
to the desktop…

You can try, but I doubt. Hardware is very different.

Of course your user data (in /home) can be copied. That will restore their desktop configuration (be it Gnome or KDE). Only see that the user(s) you create do have the same uid (number) and groupid (number) as in the old system.

After clone the HDD you must run the DVD Repair option and maybe
reconfigure the soundcard, that is my desktop to desktop experience
changing the HDD.

BTW, the 11.3 version is comming, maybe you can wait and make a fresh
install keeping the /home and users

Excelent idea imho.

Thanks for the responses

“BTW, the 11.3 version is coming,”
Will it have arrived by this weekend? I need to make a start asap. I could do a fresh install, but I would like to keep it set up as it is if possible.

Heres what I’m thinking now

Clonezilla the existing install to an image
Dump that image onto the new disk
Boot from the install DVD and run the “repair option”
Sort out any additional problems and resize partitions etc once I’m logged back in.
I’m thinking that should preserve the uids and the existing software etc.

Just to make it extra interesting the current install is on a sandisk 16gb memory card

Is this a “completely batty” idea , or just “somewhat batty”

Thanks
Gregor
