Just wanted to say here that I am very impressed with OpenSUSE 11.1, and I am replacing Windows on my HP Pavilion laptop. I am dual booting it on my desktop, so I can still play my Windows games.
But I said converts, plural, in the title, right? Yes, after watching me on my laptop my 13 year old daughter decided that she had to have OpenSUSE on her Vista machine. So I put it on there for her. She’s loving it, and has been using it with no trouble at all. That’s pretty telling for a Linux distro in my view.
My first experience with Linux was trying to install Gentoo a number of years ago. It was a complete disaster. Even with other distros I had all kinds of hardware issues. Nothing seemed to work as it should.
OpenSUSE has gone off without a hitch on two of the three computers I have put it on. I am having trouble with the system locking up on my AMD Phenom computer, but the community here has given me some advice on that; some things to try.
So…just wanted to say that I appreciate OpenSUSE 11.1, and I particularly like the fact that my daughter has taken to it so quickly. It has been easy for both of us to use, the packages that come with it are nice, and it looks good.
Good work, people.
This happens: if someone is ‘virgin’ then he or she will use linux or windows or solaris, doesn’t matter, because he or she is not used on a particular system. My daughters use only opensuse since the times of os9.3, and they are happy, until at school they have to use windows and office (shame because it means that everyone’s family should spend a lot of extra money). So, i have my political ideas and linux fits them but i don’t know if i’m acting like don chischotte! This all means that linux is not difficult. Simply people prefers to seat on something they are used to. Let’s consider what’s happening to vista in the respect of xp.
This is true.
She is not a complete OS ‘virgin,’ however. She’s been clicking around Windows since she was 3 years old. She knows how to install software, defrag the drive, run anti-virus and spyware checks, search for files, and even do very basic HTML coding on her Windows computer.
That’s what made me a bit nervous about giving her OpenSUSE, because she’s been using Windows so long I thought she might not like OpenSUSE once it was on her computer.
But on the contrary, she loves it.
Welcome to both of you. I’m sure the more you become familiar with what is available, the happier you will get.
This is what happened to me too My husband has SuSE 9.2 on his laptop, I saw it, and wanted it too. Several years later, the rest is history
With 11.2 we’ll be buying the boxed set to say thankyou. From the way 11.1 has turned out, it’ll be an exceptional release
Our house is 100 % Ubuntu at this point and only my wife has any issues which are being worked through.
The kids, though, have always been using Linux at home and are alright with the Windows they use at school, though I need to work with my older daughter a little bit more and make sure she’s comfortable.
My son, well let’s just say at age 4 he was trying to log into the computer with the username “daddy” rotfl! No worries about him being comfortable in both Linux and Windows!
