I am trying to convert a .VOB movie file (which I am told is just another extension for mpeg). My sister is trying to work with a few .VOB files in Powerdirector (read, ‘Windows only’, ugh…) and it chokes on one of them. Ironically it’s the smallest of the three files she’s using, so it’s not a size problem. However, I can’t seem to convert it into anything useful. The closest I got was using Cinelerra to render an .AVI file, which weighed in at a measly 22GB (the original .VOB was 600MB). To top it off, it only seems to contain the first 45 seconds or so of the movie. That doesn’t help me much there.
I have very little experience with movie editing, so I was hoping maybe someone with a little more knowledge could help me out?
you’re not very helpful in regard to giving relevant information. Saying converting something to AVI is not very useful. AVI is just a container that can hold TONS of different video formats. Do you know which video formats your sister’s program accepts? There must be something in the Doc/FAQ of the program. Also the Cinelerra AVI looks like lossless to me, 22 GB suggests this. As for encoders, you can use ffmpeg or mencoder to convert the Vob to something in AVI

Actually, it’s not so much that I’m not helpful, as it is that, as I said, I am not familiar with video formats. I did not know that AVI is a “container”, I had though it was just another format.
The software’s website lists “AVCHD, MPEG-2 HD and WMV-HD.” as supported formats, though there may be others. I honestly don’t know what these are.
AVCHD is H.264 format with similar structure as Blu-ray. AVCHD is mostly used in digital camcorders
MPEG-2 HD is High-Definition MPEG-2
WMV-HD is High-Definition Windows Media Video
if the software supports AVI as input, then it must support DivX/Xvid video, which is MPEG-4 Part 2 (SP/ASP). in mencoder you can use something like
