convert .VOB to .avi?

I have a short clip of video on a DVD that will load on a Windows computer and be played by Windows media player;

When I put it into the DVD drive on Gnome, and open the contents, it has two directories: AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS;

inside VIDEO_TS are several files:

VIDEO_TS.BUP VTS_01_0.BUP VTS_01_1.VOB VTS_02_0.VOB
VIDEO_TS.IFO VTS_01_0.IFO VTS_02_0.BUP VTS_02_1.VOB
VIDEO_TS.VOB VTS_01_0.VOB VTS_02_0.IFO

I would like to try to convert the video file to .avi and I can then edit it;

however when I see separate directories for audio and video, I wonder if that is very different to an .avi file, where I understand the audio and video are together

Can anyone comment on how these videos are constructed please: I firstly need to copy the VIDEO_TS.VOB to a VIDEOS directory in my home folder, and I cannot get the grammar correct to issue a cp command in the terminal; any help there would be greatly appreciated to get over this temporary dyslexia

Firstlt, let me say. VLC will play this, just point to the Video dir.

You can use any number of programs to rip a .avi from this
dvd2xvid, QVideoConverter, dvd::rip

check packman repo
you should have it in your list anyway

thank you; I will follow up on your various suggestions

I suggest dvd::rip. It’s interface is very easy to use and it also lets in the future to rip protected material if you also install libdvdcss.

oh dear, one does try; I got YaST to install dvdrip; that seemed to go fine; I set the default directories; thus setting preferences; I saved my intended project; it asked me to define the dvd drive; I thought I was doing that; I thought I had completed all formalities prior to launch sequence; I look for a “DO IT” button, and alas, I cannot see one;

I had previously installed dvd2xid; it has installed as a German version; (god bless it); that has rather confused me too; not getting too far with my very limited german

I have not previously ripped DVDs so any kind advice would be helpful

is there no ‘create project’ button?

if you use kde4.1
there is an app in the community repo acetoneiso
I have not used it, but it had dvd rip and many other features
as does k3b

thanks;
yes, I click on the initial “create project” button and get asked for a file name; I insert that; click, and get the main screen; top is storage path information; all faded; second is data source selection; it says to "select a DVD device or an image directory for input; three buttons: choose DVD device; or choose DVD image directory, or enter by hand; I try to click on the DVD device, already listed; something is not happening here, for me to move on to the third section: choose either of the two ripping modes: copy DVD to harddisk or encode on the fly:
I suspect if I could “ENTER” the dvd device, I could move to section three, and I think there is a ghosted “DO IT” button at the bottom of the screen

I have found a good wiki on debian and will attempt to digest this; dvd::rip howto
