DSS and DSS Pro file formats are used by professional voice recorders such as the Olympus DS-4000, Olympus DS-5000 and Philips LFH-9600. Is there any known program running under Linux to play and/or convert these files into something more compatible?
I found this online:
The Think Tank » How to convert DSS files to .mp3 with ubuntu linux
Unfortunately I couldn’t find any Linux software to do this so the guide suggests using Wine with some Windows software.
Thank you. Yes, I saw that work-around too, but I would need something useable from the command line. There is another tool for the Mac, but no source. Otherwise it could probably be hacked to work under Linux.
You may refer to this step by step guide to DSS to MP3, WAV, WMA at http://www.idealshare.net/audio-converter/convert-dss-to-mp3-wav-wma-m4a.html
Hope the following information will help you.
Someone suggest to play your DSS file in VLC](http://www.videolan.org/vlc/). If VLC can play it, it can be converted easily.
Or,
From an article named How to Convert DSS to MP3, WAV, WMA, M4A, FLAC, etc](http://www.faasoft.com/articles/dss-converter-convert-dss-to-mp3-wav-m4a-wma.html), I know that:
DSS (Digital Speech Standard), is a proprietary digital audio file format developed by the International Voice Association, a co-operative venture by Olympus, Philips and Grundig. DSS files are generated by digital voice recorders like Olympus Digital Voice Recorder and Philips SpeechMike. They are commonly used to create transcripts in professional environments like law firms. The DSS file format allows basic recording functionality (such as recording, playing, rewinding, etc.) as well as the ability to record in either insert or overwrite mode making it ideal for dictation.
There is a new version of DSS format called DS2 (DSS Pro), which is used by default on all the Olympus digital dictaphones: DS-2400, DS-3400, DS-5000 and DS-5000iD.
Since DSS is such a highly specialized audio format, it is not supported by many commonly used players like Windows Media Player, VLC, QuickTime, iTunes, etc, not to mention major portable devices such as iPhone, iPad, iPod, Android and so on.
If you want to convert DSS to MP3, WAV, etc, you need to follow the above guide. It is quite easy and convenient.
