Convert 5.1 to 2.1

Can anybody recommend a Linux application that converts 5.1 movie sound to 2.1?

Avidemux. From it’s wiki:

Mixer

The mixer will change the number of channels that you hear. The most common usage is to go from 5.1 sound to stereo. You will probably want Dolby Pro Logic II downmixing. Beware that to be efficient, Dolby Pro Logic audio must not be encoded with a low bitrate (~ < 160 kb/s).

P.S.: watch out for de-synchronization. Avidemux usually maps VBR audio streams to avoid this, but if it goes south you may try to convert the source to CBR before conversion.
