How do I go about changing the fan speed?
My laptop is running hotter than normal and although its not melting the case I’d rather turn the fan up to increase cooling if possible.
Noise is not a concern as I normally have music playing anyway.
Take a look in your BIOS for fan controlling. You might find more info on that in the handbook of your motherboard.
Have you installed end configured lm_sensors (run sensors-detect in a root terminal) ?
And do you use some graphic monitoring tool such as gkrellm or ksensors ?
Christophe_deR, he is not asking about monitoring the fan speed, but how to control it. Just a hint.
You might want to try running the “powertop” utility. It will make suggestions about optimizing power consumption and allow you to apply them in real-time. See its on-screen instructions. Note: it must be run as root.
I found out that my laptop will be less hot after I run this tool. Unfortunately its settings changes are not permanent, so I have to run it again after reboot/hibernate.

powertop seems to have helped in cooling somewhat though.
You should be able set the fan to run full on in the BIOS. But that will reduce battery life.

My laptop runs a cool cpu, but a hot memory and HD. The fan doesn’t
eficiently cool those parts, so I put a small wood stick just under the
rubber feet to elevate the laptop a centimeter or so above the table, to
let more air circulate.
Another solution is to add an external fan in a stand. They sell some that
run from the usb plug (which I dislike). I’m thinking of building my own
stand with a small fan running from somewhere. It is preferable the expense
than having to replace the internal fan: I hate opening a laptop, they are
crowded and fragile.
