My 12.1 KDE machine won’t go through the login session but only console login works. I have tried startx once I’m login but it shows me something wrong as below:

It seems to me there’s something wrong with my failed MATLAB installation, another story, a few weeks back. Can anyone please help me have a look of the error messages and shed me some light?
First you can not use startx as normal user since 11.4 without setting back the setuid bit (see 11.4 release notes: openSUSE 11.4 Release Notes). So you’re trying to log in as root … Tha’ts fine … (well as long as @dd doesn’t look in this thread!). I’m kidding of course.
Second, I would try to log in in icewm first … Try to export WINDOW_MANAGER and/or WINDOWMANAGER before running startx… and you’ll need to be very desperate to do it as root. So do it as normal user!
export WINDOW_MANAGER=icewm ; startx
or
export WINDOW_MANAGER=icewm-session; startx
I’m not sure icewm-session is included in icewm-lite - which is installed by default. Simply deinstalling icewm-lite should replace it with icewm-default.
Alternately you could also start kdm from the command line and see if you can log in. Did you try that?
Thanks very much please_try_again. I have been trying the icewm way but it doesn’t work.
For kdm, I may not have made it clear. I’m prompted to the graphical login session (green welcome screen) each time but my user name and pw can’t go through and it will bounce back to the welcome screen. In this case only the console login option can bring me into the system. I have tried the kdm following the instruction from kde but only got this error message:
Logging in username…
Warning: Cannot open ConsoleKit session: Unable to open session: Connection was disconnected before a reply was received.
Has this happened after an upgrade from a previous release, or after a system update? At the kdm login prompt, switch to another console (tty2 with CTRL-ALT-F2 say), then log in, and check if console-kit-daemon is running.
Did you understand that you cannot use startx as user anymore without setting back the setuid bit? If you did not, it can not work.
Now if you set and export WINDOW_MANAGER (and WINDOWMANAGER - I never know which one it checks) and type “startx” as root (!), what do you see? It’s not going to solve your kde login problem though, but it will show you that it is not an X problem.

Change session type to a non-kde one.

I understand that in the first post he was running startx as root (notice the first error
line). Also, the graphical system works, he gets the kdm greeter and login manager. It is the
kde session which does not work.

Hi please_try_again and robin_listas, thanks for your replies. As a su, I’ve tried with
export WINDOWMANAGER=icewm; startx
Now I’m in a graphical opensuse environment called IceWM, looks a bit simple and basic (not to be offensive to IceWM fans). I can find the programs I installed, and use Opera for posting though it looks like a fresh installed browser. It’s shown from the terminal that I’m using su in IceWM.
Basically it is not a broken system, but my question is, how can I go back to the normal KDE environment?
The idea was that you log in in icewm, but not as root! Follow the link in my first post, which explains how to use startx as user. Alternately, you should be able to select ‘icewm’ in kdm. Does that work? With icewm, you have a basic but usable environment from where you can continue to investigate and fix KDE.
Many thanks for your patience. I’ve followed the link you provided in your first post to uncomment the line in /etc/permission.local and run SuSEconfig which gives
Starting SuSEconfig, the SuSE Configuration Tool...
Running module permissions only
Reading /etc/sysconfig and updating the system...
Executing /sbin/conf.d/SuSEconfig.permissions...
Finished.
This has enabled me to login to IceWM as a normal user, which is much better than running in root.
Exiting IceWM, as a normal user, I did
export WINDOWMANAGER=default
startx
and get an error msg similar to the previous one

And I just realised that I can’t copy n paste from the xterm but have to come back to Win7 to finish this post.
So the problem described in the subject of your thread is solved: you can log in in console, startx and it succeeds. And you don’t even need to boot in console, since you know that you can select iceWM in kdm as well. This is only KDE which doesn’t work for you. I would suggest opening a new thread in the application subforum to catch the attention of KDE experts who might help. I personnally don’t have a clue what’s wrong with your KDE.
Solved!rotfl!
Tried other programs like gnuplot on IceWM, always get the error msg similar to the lines in #12
ksmserver: /usr/local/MATLAB/R2012a/sys/os/glnxa64/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.15' not found (required by /usr/lib64/libstreamanalyzer.so.0)

This diverts my attention to the libstdc++.so.6, which I had made some change when I was trying to install MATLAB a few weeks back. After some works with google, I finally find the solution given in #7 of the post below works very well:
[kde] [SOLVED] libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.9’ not found (required by libqscim.so) - Ubuntu Forums](http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=808045)
Hope it can help others who has got the similar problems. I have been back to the KDE life as before, problems sorted out.
Much appreciated please_try_again and everyone!

You should not play with libstdc.

It is libstdc++ not libstdc (otherwise the complete system would have
been broken) with libstdc++ “only” the C++ software were broken (the
largest part of KDE is C++).
Simple way to avoid that in the future:
If a program which is closed source and cannot be recompiled needs an
incompatible libstdc++ (or similar), place it somewhere outside the
/usr/lib* /usr/local/lib* directories (for example somewhere in /opt)
and use LD_PRELOAD, let us call the special program with this special
needs “myfancyprogram”
