Connections/links to internet hang and then whip through

I have OpenSUSE 11.0 installed and I can get to the internet but when I try any internet program, it hangs when trying to connect and then after about 10 seconds or so, it connects and then downloads superfast/normally.

This is for any program. For example, using a browser is I click on any link, it hangs for a while, then finally connects and then downloads the page super quickly (which is normal). Here’s what’s weird:

*** If I finally connect to a domain (for example opensuse.org), then any link within that domain, it connects without hanging.

  • However, any new domain will hang before finally connecting (and then it’s fine after that for anything within that domain)**

Also if I try “ping”, it will hang for a while and then all of a sudden it connects and does the rest normally.

Any ideas why it does this?

Hi,

lets try narrowing the problem down:

if you issue ‘ifconfig -a’ from the a console (as root), find your network card. Is it reporting any packet loss, collisions or other errors ?

if you ping local network devices via ip address do you suffer the delay ?

if you ping external web sites via ip rather than name do you get a delay ?

Thanks for the reply!

How do I find if it’s reporting packet loss, etc?

No. It went immeadiately when I pinged a local address.

No. It goes immeadiately.

Any ideas what the problem can be?

(NOTE: I have other computers on this same network/router and they do not have this problem. One of those is a windows computer and another is a Puppy Linux computer)

In Yast - Network Devices - Network Settings
Global Options
Uncheck enable IPv6
Finish

Reboot

Thanks, I’m going to try that. But why does that cause this problem?

IPv6 is not fully supported
