connection over ssh

Ive just recently installed openSuse for the first time since im trying to convert an old laptop into a media server. this is not my first attempt at using linux but ive never really gone into doing much with it, so now im trying to get into it.

But once i tried to connect to the laptop from my vista desktop using putty i get a timeout. I know ssh is running fine cos i did ssh to the ip of the computer and it connected.

anyway, how can i get putty to connect to opensuse?

if its any help both computers are connected to a linksys router runnig dd wrt

any help is welcomed

This is a bit confusing to me. In the second sentence you state that
SSH via IP works, while in the firs t you say SSH did not work. What
was different? I’ll guess you were testing “over IP” from the box
itself, which rules out any firewalls. Have you verified there is no
firewall in the way? Putty usually works nicely and should work to any
implementation of SSH out of the box unless you change server ports, and
then you just need to use the correct port in putty and you’re set. The
following should show a line stating SSH is listening properly on your
Linux box:

netstat -anp | grep 'LISTEN ’ | grep :22

And the following should get a couple lines from your firewall output
showing that port 22 is NOT blocked:

iptables-save | grep 22

assuming that your firewall is up:

rcSuSEfirewall2 status

Good luck.

I havent really played with Vista…but also check your windows firewall (what its called in XP–may be different in Vista) to see if its running. If it is, add an exception for port 22 (the SSH port).

Forgive me if I missed this in the OP, but are you trying to connect on the local network or through the internet. If on the local network, make sure you are using the internal IP instead of your external IP. If connecting over the internet, make sure that port 22 forwards to that particular box.
