Have just done a new install of OpenSUSE 13.2, with KDE. During the installation I entered the details for the WiFi connection I had. It now seems to be running ok, and is clearly using the wifi connection (I can get online), but the Network Manager applet shows no connections at all, used or unused (I should probably be picking up some other wifi networks as well), either in the main screen or Connection Editor. Any ideas how to fix this?
I get the impression that you are using wicked and not Networkmanager.
You can check that in YaST > Network Devices > Network Settings.
If you prefer Network Manager (e.g. because the system is a laptop and you want to take it and connect to different networks during you traveling around with it), change there.
The networks settings that you make during install are for the Wicked configuration and for use during the install. You can switch to NetworkManager, but you will then have to configure your WiFi connection once again.
The installer attempts to determine whether your computer is a Desktop system or a laptop. For a Desktop system, it sets the network to use Wicked, and NetworkManager is not used. That seems to be your situation. For a laptop, it sets the network to use NetworkManager. Sometimes the installer choice is not what you want.
To change, go to Yast –> Network Settings and use the “Global Options” tab. There you can switch between “Wicked”, “NetworkManager” or “Network Services Disabled”.
