Hi there,
I have a Sony Camera Model DCR-IPE PAL. I have a firewire card on the computer, as well as an AV output connection.
I do not have a TV card.
I was wondering whether it was possible to capture video using my computer?
Regards,
Paul.

i’m not sure what you mean by “capture”?
i’m pretty sure you can transfer (copy or move) the recorded files
of ‘captured’ moving images and sounds from your camera to your
computer…and then play them back from your computer’s hard drive…
but, i guess you want to stream live images direct from camera to
computer in real time, and ‘record’ them to your computer’s hard
drive–is that correct?

When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.
Hi there,
I am just wanting to transfer what has been recorded onto tape from the camera to my hard drive.
I must have wrongly used the word capture. I would just like to copy what is on the tape from the video camera onto my computer.
I have an AV type connector on my computer SPDF_OUT, which I’m assuming means output and is for connecting the PC to a TV monitor. I’m wondering whether this could also be used as an Input to view and copy the video to my PC.
Also would like to know whether the firewire card would allow me to bypass the requirement for me to purchase some type of TV card and allow me to copy directly onto my PC.
I hope that I have clarfied my question.
Thank you!

ok Leo, i’ve tried to google your camera to learn what you have, but
got: "No results found for “Sony DCR-IPE PAL”
but, guess if it actually records to tape you will have to find a
way to convert the analog tape output to a digital input…or install
hardware in your computer that can accept the analog TV signal…
sorry, i can’t help more…you need to find a analog/digital TV
guru…this is not either a Linux or openSUSE question, as far as i
can tell…
you might begin on google, something like this:

If your camera has a firewire connection, just connect it to the computer and open a Video editing program e.g. Kino, KDenlive, Cinelerra etc. Kino has possibly the simplest interface so it is perhaps a fair choice if you’re unfamiliar with these apps.
You should be aware off a potential firewire permission issue: KINO: raw1394 kernel module not loaded or failure to read/write /dev/raw1394!
Before you try changing the permission of the module, you might want to try running Kino as root user and see if things work fine and if the correct module is loaded by default.

Keep in mind that the link points to an Ubuntu-wiki site while you’re running OpenSuSE ( I presume), there could be differences in package names, directories etc.
