My hardware is connected OK via DSL. The phone company sends me a file. It downloads and saves to the desktop. It is a .exe file that I am supposed to open. The problem is SUSE won’t run the file. It opens a window called “Archive Manager”, and then there is this message about “Archive Manager does not know if this is a zipped file.” I need to somehow run this .exe file in order to complete my connection.
Hi
Normally you just connect to the router via a web interface, no need to
install anything. Just configure the router with the desired login
information?
You need to check the gateway address as that’s normally the login page;
/sbin/route
Then use the ip address in the ‘Gateway’ column and login via
http://<gateway_ip_address>

Malcolm, I tried route utility. It showed the 4 rows with the DSL router and Gateway columns. The only thing in the gateway column is dslrouter.westell. No matter what I try, though, Mozilla Firefox cannot find any web pages except for the phone company’s High Speed Internet Installation site.
One person at the phone company says “they do not support linux”. (I know this doesn’t make any sense.) Another person at the phone company says “I have many customers who run Linux. You have to have a link to Windows.” (I know this doesn’t make any sense.)
Anyway, continuing with the phone company’s step 1 (Prepare Installation). I have this .exe file that has been downloaded to my hard drive at /home/thomas/desktop. The file type is DOS/Windows executable. The phone company requires me to double-click this file, so I guess I have to somehow open this file. Apparently there are emulators available that run code intended for Windows. Maybe I need to download an emulator?
OK. So then use http://dslrouter.westell or to find the ip address;
ping dslrouter.westell
Should show the ip address

OK, I did a ping command and got the ip address. I typed in the ip address in Mozilla Firefox. It went to that page, but a message said “Secure connection failed”. 184.16.6.68 uses an invalid security certificate. Certificate only valid for MyDslActivation." Then I hit “Add Security Exception” and went through those buttons. This just brought me back to the phone company’s High Speed Internet Installation page.
I guess I have to get my connection validated with the phone company.
Hi
That’s your external IP address, I’m guessing you need to use YaST and configure a pppoe connection then as your router is in ‘bridged’ mode.
Edit, actually you should be able to use the Desktop NetworkManager for this…
Hi. I upgraded from 11.2 to 11.3, and now I can’t seem to get my network/internet connection working. I am using a router and a cable modem, and the connection is of course DSL. I am using wpa2 for security. I can’t even FIND where to enter my wpa2 key. Please take it from the beginning – I’m a user, not a tech.
My connection is finally established. There never was any problem wiith my hardware or my software. I finally found someone at the phone company that new what they were doing. He was able to get me around the “walled garden” by providing me with passwords.
