Connecting to N600 router share drive through samba

Hello all

I have followed the instructions given in the webpage http://harmonybanter.com/how-to-mount-a-netgear-readyshare-external-drive/ to configure my 2 TB extrernal hard disk attached to N600 router to my network. Even though theconfigurations were for ubuntu they worked pretty well in suse also. and now I have a bookmark in my dolphin folder list stating USB_Storage on 192.168.1.1. However I am not able to use it because of the following reasons:

  1. This folder is asking me for root access to mount the folder(Temporarily i sorted this by opening dolphin as super user and trying to mount)
  2. Next is even when opening with root privelage it shows the following error message

"An error occurred while accessing ‘USB_Storage on 192.168.1.1’, the system responded: mount: unknown filesystem type ‘smbfs’ ".

Dont understand what does this mean. I have already installed SAMBA SAMBA utils and CIFS utils

I have even tried to mount the drive through terminal by using the following command mount -a, but that too reported the following error

mount: unknown filesystem type 'smbfs'

Please help me to connect to this hard drive.

FYI:- I have formatted the External hard disk in NTFS file system since I want to use it in windows machines also and some of those machines dont even recognise the HDD if i format it in FAT.

Thank you and best regards

Hello,

I hope you mean with “suse” openSUSE. And when yes, please tell us at least which version you use.

I am not SAMBA user, but did you look in YaST for SAMBA configuration?

Hello

I use Opensuse 13.2.

Can you pls elaborate on what to check in the yast for samba??

Arun

Well, YaST is of course the tool to manage/configure an openSUSE system.

I do not have SAMBA installed on my system, but as far as I know, when you have it installed (and it is by default) there is/are also SAMBA entries in YaST. Thus, start YaST > Networkservices and look if there is an item Samba client or something like that.
