I have a Sony blu-ray player BDP-S1700, which I have connected to my system via USB. How do I get VLC to access it? I have installed libbluray-bdj, libbluray-tools, libbluray2 and libdvdcss2.
Gnome? KDE? XFCE? Which desktop are you using? It can make a difference in minor ways.
Do you see the drive in dmesg when you plug it in?
Please post the output of dmesg | grep sr0
I’m using the XFCE desktop.
dmesg | grep sr0 brings no output when I plug in the blu-ray device.
After plugging in my DVD device I get
[ 646.253641] sr 4:0:0:0: [sr0] scsi3-mmc drive: 24x/24x writer dvd-ram cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray
[ 646.260266] sr 4:0:0:0: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0
The Sony BDP-S1700 is literally a Blu-Ray player. Not a Blu-Ray drive. According to the specifications direct from Sony, the USB port on it is Input Only.
Why would you expect this to have worked?
(This is my bad for not having searched the model to see what it was before asking questions.)
The Sony BDP-S1700 is intended for playing movies or audio files.
You can attach drive to this Sony player with this USB port and play files (audio, video).
Possibly you can read disks by Sony player and send data by LAN port using DLNA or something else.
sfalken, Svyatko - many thanks for your interest in my “problem”. I have now bought a Verbatim External Slim-line Blu-ray Writer, which works fine with vlc and makemkv. Next time I’ll read the specification properly before I buy something!
