need a little help here, I am planing to deploy my very first server, a dell poweredge 2400 with perc 2 (not sure what that is.) twin 866 Mhz. procs. with 1 gig ram. I am a real novice to servers but I built this baby from several parted out systems and I can’t see paying several hundreds of $ to MS for an OS. (kinda poor. lol.) having deployed open suse on several laptops and home pc’s I have found your OS to be the most user friendly when converting from windows. (I do alot of PC repair and service for windows based clients.) But have never tried it out on a server before, having read alot of the stickies posted I have not seen any posting on minimal system reqs. this is going to be a clean install on a raid system (Not sure which raid yet)and I would like to know if there are any settings or software configs I should take a special intrest in. (problem areas) MY plans are to use this as a storage server connected to an array (IBM) with 14, 36 gig HD. all comments are welcome since as I stated before I am a server Novice and have no Idea of what the heck I’m doing. (can you say punter? I knew that you could. LOL.) thanks in advance!!!lol!

First, congratulations… a server is a fun step.
Generally speaking I don’t think there’s much to worry about… the
hardware may be more-advanced so that may be fun to work with but I
doubt you’ll have huge problems unless you’re using really strange,
unknown hardware and even then it will usually work though may not with
all of the manufacturer features (ask them for drivers in that case).
The difference between a server and a workstation/laptop is basically
where the user is and the services run on the machine. As a result the
OS itself is the same and you’ll feel comfortable in it though you will
have some things you’ll learn as you learn the services installed on the
system (NFS, HTTP, or whatever other services).
Good luck.
