conflicting messages with updates at log in

hello

After the gnome desktop is displayed a notification says there are sixteen updates …but checking yast online update there are none …package updater lists the updates …which one is correct yast or package updater ?

In settings / details -check for updates… it reports " software is up to date "

Open Suse Leap 42.1 Gnome 3.16.2

Is it safe to update packages with package updater ?

Yes.

My bet is that the difference is between packages and patches - the
updater, as I recall, installs both.
