I hope that Steam for Linux isn’t just for Ubuntu. Seems like it’s mostly Canonical working with them.

I think when it gets ported, if it’s “just” Ubuntu, others will figure
out how to make it run on other distributions.

I agree. It shouldn’t be that hard to convert any installer to be compatible with another distro. I’d rather they provided RPMs or even distro-specific packages, but who knows what they’ll end up doing.

It’s possible that they could do something like VMware does. I’m kinda
on the fence about that approach (providing distribution-agnostic
“bundle” packages) - on the one hand, it means a single packaging run is
done. On the other hand, though, it isn’t manageable through the package
management system. If it’s a discrete package that doesn’t have
dependency requirements from the installed package management system,
then that’s not a huge problem, but it does mean that they’re packaging
stuff that’s probably already installed on the system.
On the other other hand, though, it probably reduces their support costs
while increasing availability.

There were rumours, that they would provide a basic installer which can be packaged, it should find/be told the system’s environment variables like paths etc, then download and install Steam. A bit like we see with some games, f.e. Urban Terror.

Similar to how Dropbox’s installer works as well, it sounds like.
That’s a good solution.

Only 5 month to go. I think this was foreseeable, wasn’t it.
Straight from the horses mouth:
Steam’d Penguins | Valve
Looks like it is just for Ubuntu initially, but they say they will support other distros later. Maybe SUSE (as in the company, not the community, although that would work too) should offer to lend some developer time to help them get it running sooner rather than later. Otherwise there’s going to be a lot of people crying out about it in a few months from now.

There’s no reason someone in the openSUSE community couldn’t get in touch
with Valve and say “I’d like to help you ensure compatibility with
openSUSE as well as Ubuntu”.
So while it would be good if SUSE or openSUSE officially got involved in
it, openSUSE is a community project, and members of the community can get
involved by spearheading something like this.
