Well, sorry I did not note what the “bad” version was… That’s the one you get with a clean install of RC1. And I’m currently running 0.9.22-66.4 which runs fine.

Oldcpu, to test PA’s networked sound capabilities (I guess someone must need it), you could have all your many PC’s greet you on your return from work, or how about getting them to sing a happy anniversary song to your wife on an appropriate occasion.
Lol ! …
I’m still hacking away with this evil cough, but my headaches are finally gone. I hope to be back at work next week.
I looked as best as I could but found not way to unselect pulseaudio during install (from DVD) and select Alsa, could you explain how you did this ?
thanks !

well I simply removed everything pulse I could leaving only libpulse0 (which is also there on my 11.2 install and can’t be removed) and libpulse mainloop glib0, after that everything is back to how it should be, kmix works as expected as does Phonon…

I don’t play a lot of music but so far Amarok works fine. It sometimes
takes a little playing around with after an update.
Right now on 11.4 I do not see my center speaker under speaker setup,
but the right and left ones work. 11.4 itself seems fairly good. Do have
some problems with Kmail and distribution list but I think I finally
figured out how to use the groups, will find out later this month when I
send out my newsletter to the Lions Club.
My major problem is I still cannot shutdown (power down) my system on
11.3 or 11.4. 11.2 works fine. Been thru everything. When 11.4 comes out
next month I will do a complete new install of 11.4 and hope that fixes
it.

If no one has written a bug report against this, the odds are incredibly heavily against there being a fix. Writing a bug report is absolutely essential. There is guidance here for bug reports: openSUSE:Submitting bug reports - openSUSE One can use their openSUSE forum user name and password when logging on to bugzilla.
Russ, did you install the package “pavucontrol” for PulseAudio Volume Contriol? The configuration tab provides settings for different speaker configurations. Installed it here, but straight 2-channel stereo, so I haven’t needed to use it so far.

I don’t have this problem. As per oldcpu’s post, it sounds like a bug report is needed.

Glad to see you’ve found a solution. During installation, I also had trouble
figuring out how to change the default. I had to click on the hyperlink to
go through the sound card configuration process. Sorry that I can’t remember
exactly how I did it. I hope I won’t need to go through it again for RC2.

I figured it was something like that but could simply not find it, so right after installed I kicked pulse and was back to good old alsa the way it was in 11.2 (except for the pulse mainloop.
I also did a few more installs on my old machine, just to try different things out and to be really honest I find the whole sound system under KDE for RC1 a big mess. More then once after a 100% clean install did I have no sound or only sound during logon, sometimes test audio would play in KDE sound settings, sometimes it would play under yast sound settings but often it would not play on either, default kmix is useless. Volume levels between that small part of kmix and yast differ All this on a few year old machine which runs sound flawless under 11.2.
I would truly not mind if they did the whole thing without pulse
Lol ! I can see that myself and others all have a learning curve to follow here, and we likely need to see if we can come up with some good audio guides in the next few weeks, as I think many of us will have the same sort of experience as you and I.
it will probably get better as a right mixer is added and no longer the alsa mixer and settings between yast and mixer are the same. But if not then I got the remove pulse way and stick with that.

The configuration tab is where the center speaker is not shown. I get on
11.4 this afternoon and try again. No I did not install pavucontrol,
unless it was done by default. Cannot try on my 11.3 as I cannot afford
to mess it up.

This is what I’m using now. I’’ post after I try again and if its still
bad I’ll look for bug report and post one if none there.

Russ@upscope, Just to be clear, pavucontrol is not installed by default. I installed it from Oss repo. It also has a configuration tab for setting the speaker config, and you can set it for the number of speakers you have. Worth a try, in case of a KMix bug.
Oldcpu, I am not sure if this is helpful to you or not, but as I had some time I started with yet another clean KDE install from RC1 and wrote a bit more down:
Went into yast, removed pulseaudio and as a result 7 other components that require pulseaudio. then removed libxine1-pulse and libpulse-browse0.
Rebooted
So although this is probably not as was intended from what I tested it seems everything works as one would expect and as one is used to with 11.2/11.3.

Indeed IMHO this is a viable alternative for those who can’t get pulse audio to work, and also IMHO a viable alternative for those with older hardware where pulse audio is a definite undersireable overhead/load on such older hardware.
Having typed that, I would also be keen to see a guide to help configure/use pulse audio better. Pulse audio appears here to stay for sometime, and not just in openSUSE but in practically every other Linux distribution. Thus I’m keen to learn more how to optimize its tuning without its removal (although I don’t for a second deny there will always be cases where its removal could indeed be the best approach).
true, but some application like wine simple want alsa and not pulse, although maybe the pulse-alsa wrapper is enough for that. Have also been looking around for an alternative for amixer as I use that as an easy way to set channels when I want mic on or off for skype. (amixer -c 0 set ‘Front Mic’ unmute; amixer -c 0 set ‘Front Mic’ 29) not found that yet for pulse.
either way lets see who RC2 and further do and if some of the inconsistencies are ironed out.
Same here although I have a different audio Codec, with HDMI Audio Output, see my previous post about a change to the second message line on install to HD. That message appeared again after the first reboot. However at some point it disappeared after one of the following (not sure which):
Similar results to your Phonon settings, but how do you know “gstreamer as selected backend”? Since it is first choice in the list, I can only guess that it normally gets selected first. Is there a better way to know which backend is in use, say with Amarok?
Indeed, here are some additional comments for those interested in a working PulseAudio:
Since completing my KDE installation to HD, with the standard packages plus auto mm package intstallations on adding packman-factory, my sound output is working perfectly with PulseAudio and the default level settings. Alsamixer settings and KMix align properly (Yast volume settings seem to scale differently anyway). Given I am only using 2-channel stereo setting for speakers (auto switches to headphones on plugging in), I haven’t had to use “pavucontrol” which I installed as an extra.
The interesting new feature with P/A is the ability to control the volume independently for various output streams. For example Flash internet video started with a low volume setting, which I was able to increase independently with KMix, without altering the default Master Volume setting.
With 11.4 RC1 (KDE), so far I experienced the best Flash (10.1) streaming of internet video/audio in High Definition and full screen. That is on Intel GM45 chipset with integrated graphics. The only hiccups were when the broadband bandwidth dropped for a few seconds producing temporary freeze of video + audio (always in synch). Whereas on KDE 11.3, there were lengthy periods when with people images, the lip-synch with audio went out of synch.
Typically the effect of streaming HD was a factor of about “three times” cpu utilization for normal streaming, i.e. around 70% for HD. That might improve a bit with Flash 10.2, and obviously it will be lower for local HD video/audio.
I assume this because the buttons to move them are named Prefer and Defer, but not sure if you can which one is actually used. although would expect a message if the 1st one is not working.
Intresting to read you got a good working pulse install, alsamixer/kmix showing all the channels now or just the master one ?
