Configuring knode for NNTP access to openSUSE forums - 1

The purpose of this HowTo is the basic configuration of kde4-knode to access the openSUSE forum via nntp rather than via the web interface and to send a simple test post.

It doesn’t cover other configuration details which is left to the end user to tweak to their liking.

The first step is to install kde4-knode via YaST software management or via the command line, eg;

sudo zypper in kde4-knode

Once installed the program can be accessed via the menu system, Applications -> Internet -> News Reader

The following series of screen shots go through the configuration and sending a nntp test message to the forum. If you have previously configured kmail, some information will already be present.

  1. Personal Information

The Name and email address are the only two mandatory items that
need completion in the identity information if you have not configured kmail.

NOTE: If you use kmail then skip this and proceed to the accounts information.

In the name field, enter you login name to the Forum. In the Email address enter your login name @ no-mx.forums.opensuse.org.

Using your login (userid) will credit your post count. You can also specify a signature to append to your post.

Note the --[space] is an indicator to newsreaders that a signature follows and will be removed when you press the reply button.

If you have already setup kmail, enter your information in the Identity tab

So does entering the e-mail address as registered with the forums.

Knode will automatically add this separator should the user decide to
enter a signature.

Hi
Yes, you can use that, however if it’s a regular email address used it
is better to use the login name with no mx so it doesn’t get spammed.

In my case I just changed mine on the settings page to add in nospam
and use that in my news reader.

This method does mean I don’t receive emails from the forum though.
