Perhaps you are impacted by this bug?
Is your model listed explicitly in /usr/share/hplip/data/models/models.dat?
Yes, it is listed in the latter file
> egrep 'm282|M282' /usr/share/hplip/data/models/models.dat
[hp_colorlaserjet_mfp_m282-m285]
model1=HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M282nw
ppd-name=hp-color_laserjet_m282-m285-ps.ppd
Yet, I’ve wondered where “yast2 scanner” auto detects the “hpaio” driver and “HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M282nw” model from? When I do a manual search I have not found this on the long list of several hp_colorlaserjet_mfp_ models.
Possibly this system list correspons to the OpenPrinting.org’s list where this M282nw or driver is not found.
Driver: hplip | OpenPrinting - The Linux Foundation

Hmmm…is the plugin installed? Any other dependency issues?

(In case I didn’t already mentione it; when I encountered the hp scanning issue a few days ago, I reconfigured my legacy Epson Perfection 1640 scanner via “yast2 scanner” and with usb wire to the workstation, and it worked immediately with the same scanning applications - as always)
Finally I found a working solution or workaround.
I came to mind to test the hp mfp scanner by disabling it’s wifi (ip-address) setup and instead usb connect it to my “scan working” laptop.
The “yast2 scanner” auto-detected the usb scanner, I tested it there and the scanner worked.
The laptop had still installed the previous hplip 3.20.11 package version from obs home:Sauerland which is the same version as the plugin.
My workstation as mentioned has been updated to the latest hplip 3.21.2.
Then I downgraded my workstation to the hplip 3.20.11 package I could find at
https://software.opensuse.org/ymp/Printing/openSUSE_Leap_15.2/hplip.ymp

It seems the trouble has been caused by the mismatch between the installed (available?) hp-plugin 3.20.11 version and the latest hplip 3.21.2 version, or possibly a bug somewhere.
Well I’m confused. The output you’ve shared previously was already for a USB-connected HP MFC device!

device `hpaio:/usb/HP_ColorLaserJet_MFP_M282-M285?serial=VNBRNC17GM' is a Hewlett-Packard HP_ColorLaserJet_MFP_M282-M285 all-in-one
Anyway good to read it is finally working as expected.

My workstation as mentioned has been updated to the latest hplip 3.21.2.

Downgrading to a known working version a good move IMO.

Quite possibly.
Yes, I know this thread has grown long with the risk of confusing, and I was therefore in doubt if I should continue on the same thread.
To try to sum up, the initial part post #1- post #8 dealed with the title “Configuring a scanner of a wireless HP ColorLaserJet MFP M282nw”. The MFP device was and has been usb wired connected to a local Workstation, while the wireless setup was on a Laptop.
The second part now, post #9 and later, has been troubleshooting why scanning not (longer) did work on the usb connected Workstation (obviously after hplip upgrade from version 3.20.11 to version 3.21.2). The usb scanner device and hpaio driver was still detected yes, but the scan applications failed due to I/O connection error.
Scanning on the Laptop has yet worked wireless since the initial successful setup with hplip 3.20.11. Lastly in post #27 scanning on the laptop was also tested and verified successful also with a usb wired connection to the scanner.
Then I downgraded to hplip 3.20.11 on the Workstation, and usb scanning was fixed.
Thanks for all patience and hints.
Yes, I surmised this, based on your last post. All good. Glad that hplip version 3.20.11 is working as expected.
