Humm . . . It is a bit hard to tell exactly what you have configured to be honest. I would suggest posting the zone file so it is clear.
Also, as a minimum, make certain that you can resolve locally first:
#host somedomain.com localhost
#host ns1.whatever.com localhost
#dig somedomain.com @localhost
If it is resolving locally, then make the switch.
