Computer shut-down

When I shut-down the computer from OpenSuse 11.4, it does log out and exit the operating system but the computer does not turn off. Can this possibly be corrected?

Probably, but you’ll need to tell us more about the system and if you see
any messages on the terminal console (you might need to press ESC to get
the messages to show up).

What do I look for in the shut-down messages? Can the these shut-down messages on the terminal console be written to a file?

press Esc and you can watch it…

or, on next boot open the /var/log/messages and see if there are any
errors/warning near the end…

but, that is not all what Mr. Henderson was wanting to know…

tell us about your machine, is it a super computer or a laptop? what
make and model (have you looked in the hardware compatibility list
<http://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Hardware> to see if this is a known
problem with your machine?)

running KDE or Gnome?

is this the first linux you have had on it, or is it an upgrade from a
previous?

did it work ok for a while and suddenly stopped shutting completely
down? what happened? (like have you installed any software from factory,
playground, tumbleweed or an unstable repo? or maybe this change came
soon after an update?)

did you do this prior to installing: http://tinyurl.com/2ebcf27

Before the system shuts down, there will probably be an indication of
some sort of failure. That would be important to know.

It may get written to /var/log/messages if the system is shutting down
cleanly. If it’s not, then you’ll need to note it before the system
shuts down - if it’s reproducible, if it were me, I’d take a photo of the
screen (or video, for that matter) to be able to catch it.

Thank you for your help so far.
I have been trying to get the information I had available for the computer when it was an XP Windows PC.
Here it is:

OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600
OS Manufacter Microsoft Corporation
System Name NEW-59580BC5683
System Manufacter MSI
System Model MS-6741
System Type X86-based PC
Processor x86 Family 15 Model 12 Stepping ) AuthenicAMD ~2000 Mhz
BIOS Version/Date American Megatrends Inc. Version 07.00T, 4/2/2001
SMBIOS Version 2.3
Windows Directory C:\WINDOWS
System Directory C:\WINDOWS\system32
Boot Device \Device\HarddiskVolume1
Locale United States
Hardware Abstraction Version =“5.1.2600.5512(xpsp.080413-2111)”
User Name NEW-59580BC5683\New User
Time Zone Eastern Daylight Time
Total Physical Memory 512.00 MB
Available Physical Memory 69.66 MB
Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB
Available Virtual Memory 1.96 GB
Page File Space 1.06 GB
Page File C:\pagefile.sys

When installing OpenSuse 11.4, the installer was told to use the entire HD. (I did not want Lilo or Grub for a dual boot. And I have separate Windows PCs anyway.) Perhaps the MBR and boot needs to be enabled. (Perhaps the hardware needs to be set to UTC too, I am not sure.) I hope this information helps.
Rob

Oh, I forgot to add the information that I had 1 GB added bringing it to 1.5 GB.

ok, lets try an experiment (to see if it will shutdown and power off, if
manually commanded to do so)

-shut down all running applications (email, browser etc etc)

-hold down Ctrl and Alt, and momentarily press F2

-the GUI will go away and you be at a full screen command line interface
(CLI) terminal with a prompt asking you to login

-type and enter

root

-the CLI will respond with “Password:”, type in and enter your root
password…you will not see what you type, so be careful…the system
will see what you type and it is case sensitive, that is This and this
and tHis are three totally different passwords…

if it doesn’t accept your password, check to make sure caps lock is not on…

-when given the correct password, the system will respond by changing
the prompt to red (to remind you to be CAREFUL) and add this symbol for
root: #

-type in and enter

shutdown -hP now

note: not “-Hp” and not “-hp”

if it shuts down and powers off report that…if anything else happens
i would expect an error message of some sort…if you get one then write
it down (exactly) and report it…

[truth is i’m not sure exactly what to do with either report…but, i
guess some here will…and, i think it will be to edit a file in rc0.d]

Thank you DenverD. I will try this.

I also have the KDE desktop, if that makes any difference.

Nevertheless, you must have either lilo or grub or it will not boot.
Anyway, that is irrelevant.

Irrelevant.

There are two methods for powering down: acpi bios or shutdown. I’m not
aware of a method to choose either, except when hibernating.

Is acpi disabled on your machine? See the boot log.

Shut down in verbose text mode, and make a photo when it stops. Post it to
a pastebin and tell us.
