This is a brief description of the facilities from the computer science department of the university I will be attending in the fall:
Students have 24-hour access to the departmental computer laboratories, which are equipped with the latest Pentium and NeXT workstations. Students with their own computers can access the department server from home. The department maintains six instructional labs with computers that run Centos Linux as their base operating system. Windows access involves use of terminal server clients that access the department’s bank of Windows Terminal Servers. VMware and User Mode Linux are used in upper- division classes such as Operating Systems and UNIX System Administration for projects. The department provides Cadence and Synopsys software packages for embedded systems design and Xilinx FPGAs and Intel IXP 1200 and 2400 network processor boards for embedded systems and network design projects.
Two questions:
In the quote, it says
VMware and User Mode Linux are used in upper- division classes
What do they mean by ‘user mode linux’ ?
I want to practice some programming now, whats a good language that I could start learning to code with? I was thinking python…
and, before you think i’m brushing you off: remember you asked for an
opinion, and my opinion is to wait and see what the school throws at
you…i BET they expect to teach you, and not the other way around…
or, you can just start at the more basic general level of education
(rather than jumping into ONE SPECIFIC ‘language’) by learning about
language_S_ at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Programming_languages
