Computer extremely sluggish after update

On my i586 Tumbleweed computer I updated to verison 20160914. Afterwards the computer seems to be constantly busy and reacts only after a huge delay when I click on something and the hard drive LED is constantly on or flickering. So I used the command top to see what is happening see http://paste.opensuse.org/83654739
As you can see the top 3 commands - all with a separate PID are systemd-coredum and together they use up nearly 80% of the CPU. Now, about 15 minutes later although systemd is still in top with hardly any usage the system is working again properly. What is happening and why is the system unusable for the first 15 minutes after logging in? And what is this systemd-coredum and why are there 3 instances of this? Of course this laptop is at least 10 years old and with 2G or RAM not top of the range any more but I presume there is something else wrong. Any ideas are appreciated.

Uli

Hi
As root user watch what is happening in the journal;

journalctl -f

Too look at what has happened;

journalctl -x

Use the --help option on man page for more options.

Thank you for your reply, malcolmlewis. The output from journalctl -x is ten thousands of lines - here is the output (which took a few minutes) of:

linux-top:~ # journalctl -x | tail -n 50

linux-top:~ #

I must say I don’t understand most of it. I checked the file /etc/resolvconfig which is mentioned several times - the DNS entry has changed more than a year ago when I changed ISP (other dns servers now of course) - I don’t know why this entry is still here as the file /etc/resolv.conf.netconfig only contains the dns servers of the previous ISP. So still no idea what is wrong or what to do

Hi
So your using wicked and have set the nameservers manually in /etc/resolv.conf file? If so I would fire up YaST network settings and set them in there and remove that old file resolv.conf.netconfig.

Your running a web server on this system, or something thinks it’s running a web server and trying to conatct it on port 80.

Looks like you have both ipv6 and ipv4 running, if don’t need ipv6 I would suggest disabling (again in YaST network settings on the general tab).

The systemd-coredump (from top), have a read here: systemd-coredump See if the coredumpctl command mentioned provides info.

Is it (systemd-coredump) still running, or all calmed down now, does it re-appear on a reboot?

thank you, malcolmlewis. I have not set up the /etc/resolv.conf file manually here (although on other computers I have, using the dns servers of opendns) but it looks as if it just uses the router for resloving IP addresses.

uli@linux-top:~> cat /etc/resolv.conf
# Generated by NetworkManager
search fritz.box site
nameserver 192.168.2.1

I don’t run a webserver here and I don’t know what is thinking it does. But I have checked - it seems that several apache packages were installed but they are now removed.
Yes I use IPv6, I purchase regularly from China and often IPv4 does not get me there. Further I think it should be normal to run both - after all IPv6 is there for over 20 years and should be well established and IPv4 has not much room for growth.
I could not get much information out of the coredumpctl command, just single lines like

Sat 2016-09-17 11:55:13 NZST 3107 1000 100 11 * /usr/bin/akonadiserver

The systemd-coredump is gong now but it happened several times at the startup. I will try a reboot later to see weather it is still there.
Cheers
Uli

I just rebooted and again I had 2 instances of systemd-coredump with over 35% CPU each.

Hi
Not sure if the site as a domain would cause issues (I don’t think so).

Maybe some other users can comment on ‘akonadiserver’ I don’t use KDE…

OK, so your router is you nameserver? You don’t use your ISP ones, or manually configure in your router? For example I use openDNS servers.

Hi
Check the dump again, if it’s the same issue, then it’s something to investigate further.

I see you are using openDNS, then I would set this system up the same, so your using NetworkManager, not wicked? If NetworkManager, then configure DNS via the GUI, else if Wicked, then add via YaST Network Settings.

The router uses the dns servers from the ISP, but on other computers I use openDNS too.
Re network - I thought I use wicked - it said so too in the output of journalctl -x. However I too have seen that the resolv.conf file was created by networkManager. Is it possible that I have both running? If so - how can I disable NetworkManager?
Here is the output of

uli@linux-top:~> coredumpctl | tail

It looks as if akonadiserver is quite involved - 5 dumps out of 10.

Hi
In YaST Network Settings on the General tab will show what your using, just set to the one you want in the dropdown…

In YAST it is set to wicked service - but

it looks as if NetworkManager is still running?

Maybe this problem?

https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/519603-Problem-with-KMail-and-Akonadi

Yes, wolfi323, it seems the same problem. Akonadi crashed twice yesterday when I downloaded the mail. I had problems with akonadi on this machine before with the high CPU load (there are at least 2 earlier posts in this forum) and one of the things I did to reduce the CPU load was to delete the akonadi notes agent straight after the start and to disable the baloo search (delete baloo and disable baloo updates through YAST). This has improved the situation but it got gradually worse until this update yesterday, since which the machine is unusable for at least 10 minutes after starting (and it cannot be used to go on kmail). I now used another machine (I download the mail to a NAS device connected to the network). I will start up the tumbleweed machine later when I have more time and try the fix.

Thank you, wolfi323, after adding this repository and zypper dup --from … the system improved considerably. There was still one instance of systemd-coredump with over 40%CPU in top for about 3 minutes but then it disappeared. Now the command

uli@linux-top:~> coredumpctl | tail

As you can see there are only parcellite and korgac (whatever they are) in coredump. Overall the system is much more usable as well. May be one of you knowledgeable guys can tell me what they are and if this is something to worry about. Otherwise I will be watching the system’s behaviour over the next weeks.

Well, I have no idea about parcellite.
But do you really need it?
Plasma5 does have its own clipboard manager(s).

It’s a known (and not easily solvable) “problem” that kactivitymanagerd crashes on quit, but that shouldn’t cause your issues (as it happens on logout).

korgac is news to me though.
It shouldn’t even be started automatically on login, we have a patch for that.
Try deleting ~/.config/korgacrc.
Should also prevent akonadiserver from starting…

No idea it was installed during the standard install. So I take it it is not needed (e.g. for klipper) and deleted it.

I deleted ~/.config/korgacrc
After the reboot I had the following:

uli@linux-top:~> coredumpctl | tail
Tue 2016-09-20 12:40:14 NZST 2313 1000 100 6 * /usr/bin/parcellite

uli@linux-top:~> akonadictl status
Akonadi Control: running
Akonadi Server: running
Akonadi Server Search Support: available (Remote Search)
.......
uli@linux-top:~>akonadictl stop

The first 2 dumps were before I changed anything then after deleting parcellite and ~/.config/korgacrc I had the second 2 dumps. It didn’t stop the akonadiserver from starting though. I stopped it manually as it is enough to have it running when using Kmail.

No it is not needed for KDE, and it is not installed by default either (if you do a KDE installation).

Hm, akonadiserver should only start if something is actually using it.
If korgac doesn’t start on login any more, something else must still be running that uses Akonadi.

It may help to delete saved searches to “fix” the crash, or you could install the packages mentioned in the link I posted.

As I wrote, kactivitymanagerd is actually crashing on exit, i.e. logout. But there’s no way to fix that, it’s actually a bug in Qt.

Hi Wolfi323, thanks again for your reply.

It may help to delete saved searches

Are you talking of the baloo searches - they don’t exist. Baloo is not installed and marked (using YAST) never to be installed since previously this took too much resources (as discussed in a previous thread some time ago).

or you could install the packages mentioned in the link I posted

I followed the instruction from the link with the repo with the the built against the previous version of libxapian. These packages (except baloo) are installed.

Try deleting ~/.config/korgacrc

After I deleted this it was gone but a now there is a new file korgacrc in ~/.config. I thought this was the purpose to get the computer to create a new file. But now I have checked on one of the LEAP42.1 computers and this doesn’t have the file korgacrc. you wrote previously:

So since I have the new korgacrc I presume korgac starts on login. How do I disable that?

No, I’m talking about kmail/Akonadi searches, which are completely unrelated to baloo.

Baloo is just a file indexer, and doesn’t even use Xapian any more. It did in previous versions, but the developers switched to using LMDB instead a while ago.

Well, then you shouldn’t be affected by this particular problem.

No idea why Akonadi and/or korgac crashes for you then, maybe an actual backtrace may help.

Set Autostart=false in korgacrc, but that should be the default (that’s why I suggested to delete the config file).

When korgac is started, it will create a new korgacrc with the default settings, so that’s normal that the file reappeared.

On second thought: better quit it if it is running by right-clicking on its system tray icon (it will ask whether you want to start it automatically on login, answer “No”).
If you cannot find its icon in the system tray, click on the small “up” arrow to show the hidden icons.

It may be restarted by session management if it is running when you logout/shutdown.

Thank you wolfi323

I right clicked korgac and selected “quit”. It disappeared with no questions asked. So I went into the korgacrc file. Autostart was set to true so I changed it to false. afterwards after a restart there was no systemd-coredump visible in the top or the coredumpctl command and akonadi didn’t start. So far it seems that the system started faster and I could use it straight after login.
Thank you very much for your help.
