Sorry to say this, but remote desktop works very nice in windows world.
Will the new branch, compiz nomad, be able to equal windows’ experience when it comes to,
reattaching sessions? even if that session was originally started as a normal local session?
Can someone tell me how the following pieces fit together?
XDMX(2) and xrdp:
The info on the net isn’t clear, does xrdp wrap the information it gets from XDMX in a rdp protocol, and nothing more?
Will XDMX2 be able to forward an session started originally on the local box to, if I’m correct about the above question,to xrdp, without disadvantages. Disadvantage e.g. would be non working opengl and video even when logged into the session locally.
I agree with you. Have you gotten answers to any of your questions. I use nomad to connect from home to work but cannot attach to a local session I have running at work. Nomad can only attach to a session it had started which is ok if you always connect to a machine remotely but that is not the typically case particularly for a desktop.

Can’t say. However, I use NX (FreeNX) protocol all of the time. It’s
faster than rdp (except the new version that came out with Win Svr
2008… which is about the same) and I can suspend and resume sessions
just fine. Also resumes fine when you’re disconnected suddenly.
We have used this for contractors working around the globe to allow them
to hit a desktop so that they do not lose their work even with a
sporadic connection.
Now this doesn’t mean they have accelerated 3D. Just a normal desktop.
But it is very fast and very reliable (and it’s pretty secure as well).
I use nx as well to connect to different servers. What I am really looking for is a way to re-connect to the session of my work machine from my home machine. When I use nomad or nx, I don’t get connected to the physical x11 session I have at work. It opens a different session and I can disconnect and reconnect to that different session. I believe x11vnc can connect to the real x11 session of a machine but am not sure of how good the performance is.
I found out that nx has an option to attach directly to a native x11 session on a machine. The option is called shadow. I tried this but it seemed extremely slow and hard to work with. I don’t know why it was so slow and un-responsive. I tried using the regular nx with unix/kde option and performance is great.
well xdmx should be the part where it "hooks-in"in the X server. So valuable information about windows, composition etc is not lost, before it’s being shadowed, which would make it much more efficient instead of simply compressing parts of the screen and send them over like vnc does.
I agree. I have tried both x11vnc and nx with shadow option and both are substantially slower than nomad. Has there been any progress with nomad in this area? Does anybody know?
