compiz freezes but mouse moves

Dear all,

I have an 32 bit based computer with openSuse 11.1 installed on it. My desktop is Gnome and I have currently enabled the 3D effects (done using the control panel).

My problem is that I have sometimes random (and not so random) freezes of the system that allow me to move the mouse, but I cannot do anything more. I even cannot log in remotely into the computer to see whats happening. I have googled and other persons have got similar problems, but this happened to them when the screensaver got activated. But this is not my case.

For instance, if I use “Alt+Tab” keys to select an application from my desktop most of the times the system gets hung after repeating a few times the “Alt+Tab” combination. Other stuff such like the “Expo” also gets hung most of the times.

If I try to view the SVG file attached below using ‘xv’ (a GIF/TIFF/JPEG/PostScript Image Viewer, available from openSUSE repository) the system also mostly hangs. I know that ‘xv’ is not made to view those type of files, but in these cases ‘xv’ should show the file as a text file.

Anyone can help me ? Is there any log where I may look at ? Is this related to compiz, the nvidia driver or none of them ?

This is the nvidia driver I have installed:

zypper search nvidia | grep ^i

i | nvidia-gfxG01-kmp-default | NVIDIA graphics driver kernel mod-> | package
i | x11-video-nvidiaG01 | NVIDIA graphics driver for GeForc-> | package

zypper info nvidia-gfxG01-kmp-default | grep Version

Version: 173.14.18_2.6.27.29_0.1-18.2

/sbin/lspci | grep nVidia

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200] (rev a1)

lsmod | grep nvidia

nvidia 7087264 34
agpgart 32148 2 nvidia,intel_agp
i2c_core 29892 2 nvidia,i2c_i801

zypper info compiz-gnome | grep Version

Version: 0.7.8-9.2.1

Best,

Luis

Here is the file for which ‘xv’ hangs…

Dear all,

I’ve seen several posts for Ubuntu and OpenSUSE that talk about the freeze when the application switcher is used. Just search for “alt-tab compiz freeze”. The problem seems to be related to compiz.

In [TIPS] ALT-TAB Make Ubuntu Freezes | Ivan Kristianto Blog](http://www.ivankristianto.com/2009/03/tips-alt-tab-make-ubuntu-freezes/) they propose to uncheck the Reflection checkbox, but I cannot find it by running the compizconfig-settings-manager.

I’ll continue investigating…

Best,

Luis

Dear all,

I’ve found a similar post in this forum regarding the same problem I have. The solution proposed is to deactivate the Animation plugin in the compiz settings (run compizconfig-settings-manager from a terminal). I’ve done it and I do have no more freezes!!!

Best,

Luis

Hi,

I see you’re using version 0.7.8. I’ve had a situation where another poster had the same problem when using Alt+Tab and an upgrade to the newest version of Compiz helped them out, without having to deactivate any plugins. Perhaps you can try that if you start missing the animations?

Take Care,

Ian
