Compiz Crashes and Must Be Restarted

Okay - if this issue has been dealt with, please direct me.

I am running Compiz on a Dell e6500 laptop with an nVidia graphics card. Compiz runs so-so. Seems the refresh on my screen is a bit slow. I have to run the mouse over a window sometimes to get it to refresh. My main problem is that Compiz crashes constantly. When I enable desktop effects through running from the terminal-

I get this output:

Not being an expert in Compiz, I see somethings are missing, but I read that everything should work okay after the “Dry Run.”

Here is the output when it crashes.

/usr/bin/compiz-manager: line 424: 9343 Segmentation fault ${COMPIZ_BIN_PATH}${COMPIZ_NAME} $COMPIZ_OPTIONS “$@” $COMPIZ_PLUGINS

Perhaps a plugin is crashing, anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Need a bit more information such as which version of compiz, Suse and GPU driver. I assume your Nvidia GPU is a Quadro NVS 160M ?

Compiz 0.7.8
OpenSuSE 11.1
Quadro NVS 160M
Driver -nvidia 180.29

I’m not to sure about the driver, but that is what I saw in the nVidia config tool.

What repo are you using for compiz?

What Window Manager (KDE, GNOME, etc) are you using?

Using Gnome - as far as repo, I’m assuming you mean software repository? If so - I am just using the opensuse 11.1 repos, nvidia and packman. If I misunderstood - apologies in advance.

Are you getting compiz from a software repository? There are several, and each one is for something different.

I do not have any Compiz specific repos. I am assuming I installed Compiz from the OpenSuse 11.1 install DVD.

The version on the DVD should work. If you have the DVD still enabled in YaST, I would search for compiz and force a re-install make sure you have the plugins installed. It looks like a plugin is crashing (I think).

If you are feeling brave:

Index of /repositories/home:/cyberorg/openSUSE_11.1

Cyberorg is one of the Compiz developers and I’ve found in the past that using his Git repositories solves a few problems. Important ! If you do use this one make sure you uninstall compiz first and turn off any other compiz repos.

Here is his blog page
