compiling HAL form source (needed for Amazon Instant Video)

Interesting part is:

09:45:05.306 [E] create_cache.c:551: Cannot scan '/etc/hal/fdi/preprobe': No such file or directory 09:45:05.306 [E] create_cache.c:709: Error generating fdi cache

So next question - do you have /etc/hal/fdi, what is inside?

I have /etc/hal but it is empty, no fdi folder or any other.

I cannot help much, but from a working system with the haldaemon running
I can tell you that this does not even exist on openSUSE, it seems to be
just one of several directories which the starting daemon scans on
notices that it is not there an proceeds.
The error message from this I also get on a working system and it has
absolutely no effect on hal.

Could it be possible your system has some libraries that hal needs and mine doesn’t, maybe glib ??
I did a fresh install a few months back when I upgraded to 12.2. After upgrading 11.3-11.4-12.1 I thought a fresh start was warranted. This time I used a simple CD though, so I only have the very very basic.

On another note, I booted into ubuntu and can confirm that all the hal directories are populated there. Specifically the fdi folder and it has plenty of stuff inside.
Ubuntu didn’t have hal either at first. I had to use " apt-get install " afterwards Amazon Videos started working without a hitch.

Reading this thread, reminded me of this earlier discussion:

http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/applications/476328-flash-player-requires-hal-drm-content-3.html

and the link to (Gentoo-based) instructions for installing HAL (with some modifications to cope with GLib changes):

Protected flash video (requires HAL) on Gentoo - Super User

I remember my comment to Martin about the possibility of creating a ‘minimal’ HAL sufficient to allow protected flash content to run

Now that you mention it, that thread already gave me a deja vu as there
were several about hal and drm, though this seems to be the first one
where the hal from the kde3 repo does not work for a user.

I’m a dumbass hack but…

anyone considered linking /usr/share/hal/ to /etc/hal

dumb-ass… but

this fixed my problem

Problems playing protected video content | Ubuntu Linux, Flash Player 11

Test protected video content playback using the demo player
  1. First, launch the Adobe demo video player container: http://drmtest2.adobe.com:8080/SVP/SampleVideoPlayer_FP.html

Note the Adobe Flash Player version in the lower left of the demo video shell. Make sure that indicate 11.2 or higher

  1. Play sample protected content.

Enter the following URL in the field "Input the video URL: (case-sensitive)
http://drmtest2.adobe.com:8080/Content/anonymous.f4v

  1. Press the [Play] button at the bottom of the video container.

The anonymous.f4v protected content should play. (This video is called the Getty “train” video.)

cheers,

– Pete
