Compatibility with Datawind Netbook

I am looking into buying a cheap netbook and saw the Datawind Ubi-Surfer (e.g., Datawind Ubi-Surfer Netbook | Ebuyer.com) . It comes with a pre-installed Windows CE which I will be keen to erase as soon as possible.

The spec is low, as can be expected: 128Mb ram (1GB flash), no optical drive (which poses the question of how to install openSUSE), but 3xUSB and ethernet are included.

I do not intend to use it for any processing. It is to run java applications and play music from an external USB hard drive.

Does anyone know whether this little box can cope with openSUSE 11.2 (or 11.3)? and if so, how do I install it without an optical drive?

Thanks,

Abe

That is way to light weight for Suse. I’d say you need a light weight distro like puppy or DSL

Thanks! Will keep looking for a cheap solution.

I saw an ad today for an Acer Netbook at about $280 US. That will run Linux - I
have a similar HP Mini 110 that works well.

I think you will find the datawind (along with other winCE netbooks) runs on an ARM processor which is not a general option for most linux distros.
If you live in UK, look at morgancomputers.co.uk for good deals on acer 8.9 inch netbooks. The same price gives you a better spec. Also the argos outlet on fleabay has some good offers.
