Compatibility of Brother HL-3040CN colour laser printer with openSUSE 11.2 64-bit

Hi,

I have a recently purchased Brother HL-3040CN printer that I had been using under Windows XP. I’m hoping to use it on openSUSE 11.2 64-bit. Having consulted SDB:Installing a Printer - openSUSE I ran lpinfo -l -m | grep HL-3040CN as su… evidently this model is not supported.

The Brother site Brother Solutions Center : Brother Driver for Linux Distributions seems to suggest maybe there is hope… but before ploughing ahead, I wonder if anyone has experience with this. I am relatively new to Linux. Thanks, John.

64bit may require a little more tweaking than a 32bit system; as the drivers look in /usr/lib rather than /usr/lib64 but we should be able to guide you on a symbolic link, to tell the drivers where to look …

if you go here

Brother Solutions Center : Brother Driver for Linux Distributions

you can see drivers for your printer

Suse uses the rpm variant;

lpr downloaded and installed and then cupswrapper installed after

as on the instructions page

Brother Solutions Center : Brother Driver for Linux Distributions

they suggest installing by

su
and then enter root password and then

rpm -ihv --nodeps (lpr-drivername)
for the lpr and then

rpm -ihv --nodeps (cupswrapper-drivername)

does that sort of get you started?

Hi:

Many thanks for your suggestions. I followed your prescription (downloading the .rpm files to mp) and issued the commands exactly as you gave them. No hitches at all and the printer is functioning very nicely. John.

that’s great; well done; you did very well; enjoy!
