I can only bring up Linux (any flavor) in Failsafe Mode, because all other modes give me a display of relatively horizontal lines. Any recommendations? In Failsafe mode, everything seems to work well, but I hate having to pick “Failsafe” to make things work.

probably something to do with your video chipset and/or driver…i’d
suggest you begin here:
–
DD http://tinyurl.com/DD-Caveat
openSUSE®, the “German Engineered Automobiles” of operating systems!
From failsafe mode, open a terminal and run
/sbin/lspci -nn
Have a look for the entry that pertains to your graphics chipset, and report back here.
I have the same Presario f700… here is the line:
VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation C67 [GeForce 7000M / nForce 610M] [10de:0533] (rev a2)
I am running a live Sabayon from USB because the first update on any Linux system causes problems.
The VESA driver works well enough if the system will load it as a fallback. It has to be available as alternate boot. VESA package should be installed and worse yet updated along with kernel updates.
I think so maybe.
Install the NVIDIA driver.
