Compability HP compaq 6715s Laptop ?

Hello everybody,

I have no idea if I’m right here because I’m new. So in case this is not the right topic, please remove my question. I’m going to install opensuse (11.2) for the first time. I’ve worked through all the information for newbies allready but there is one thing I still need to know. I’ve checked compability with my laptop HP compaq 6715s but could only find the information that it works with 11.0 and 11.1. So I’m not quite sure if to install suse 11.2 (as I don’t want touse windows at all I’m afraid that maybe I can’t use my pc at all if the installation does not work).

Thanks!

:)jojoli

I moved this thread to the forum LAPTOP area as it was previously posted in the wrong area. In addition I changed the thread title from “Compatibility” to " Compatibility HP compaq 6715s Laptop ? " which is more appropriate.

Done some searching on the compaq 6715s. Maybe you will need some help on the video card, but 11.2 will be a great OS for this laptop IMHO.

I think the Compaq 6715s has the ATI Radeon X1250, based on this reference: http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12688_div/12688_div.PDF

I note one can buy this laptop with SLED-10. The key thing you may wish to give thought to is the graphic driver. Note openSUSE-11.2 will work with this, but you may find its graphics (with the ATI Radeon X1250 graphics) are not as good as you might like.

With openSUSE-11.1 and its 2.6.27 kernel, you can install the old proprietary Catalyst-9.3 graphic driver.

With openSUSE-11.2 and its 2.6.31 kernel, none of the proprietary Catalyst driver versions will work with that kernel. Hence you will need to use the radeon open source driver, and unfortunately the radeon open source driver had some problems with openSUSE-11.2 (it worked, but it was not the best).

openSUSE-11.3 (currently at milestone6) will have much better graphic support, with the open source radeon driver, for the ATI Radeon X1250 hardware.

Hence you may wish to give thought to installing openSUSE-11.1, and then jump to 11.3 when 11.3 is out.
