Colorful Screen

Hi,

Every time I boot the computer, the screen keeps on changing to random colors (everything is working, and I can open/close applications). Even after 1 hour the screen still keeps on changing colors. Anyone know how I can solve this problem? I am running Opensuse Tumbleweed (with the latest updates, I double-checked for updates).
I have absolutely no idea how I can fix this, or what information to post.

It sounds like this could be a loose connection - what kind of video card
is it, and what kind of monitor do you have? What is the connection from
the monitor to the video card (VGA, HDMI, etc)

Hi,

I have a lenovo yoga 2 laptop. With a Intel HD Graphics 4400 graphic card. My monitor resolution is 1920x1080 (and that is about all I know about my monitor, I don`t know the way the monitor is connected to the graphic card).

What kind of cable is it?

1920x1080 is probably an HDMI cable.

Hi,

I dont have the laptop connected to a screen, the laptops screen itself doesnt work properly. When I am in Windows (I use windows 10) it works, the screen doesnt keep changing colors… However, when I use opensuse tumbleweed the problem emerges.

Thank you for your help,

By that, I meant that there is no external monitor used. The laptops own monitor is being used, so I dont know much about the connection.

Ouch. That could be an internal connection that’s loose. Does it change
if you change the angle of the screen?

Hi,

Well, unfortunately it doesnt work if I change the angle of the screen. But what I find extremely odd is that it works perfectly in windows, but when I boot into tumbleweed the screen starts changing colors. The graphics driver could be the problem, but then again, I had tumbleweed and many other OS(s) run on this laptop and Ive never came across this problem before.

That is strange.

Maybe take a screencap so we can see what you’re seeing?

Hi,

I have made a 12 second video of the problem. But on this forum I dont know how to upload a video or file (without using links). I tried but couldnt find the exact same problem in google images or on youtube…

Hi,

I had an idea, and it was to reset the desktop effects to the default. And it has solved the problem. I am trying to figure out exactly which effect has caused the problem. I have tested out each one of the desktop effects and none of them caused the problem to re-appear. I have tried to see if the problem will come back using the exactly same settings I used before. So I cannot get the problem back

The color changing thing looks the same way as if I had a external monitor connected to a computer and the VGA plug is not inserted correctly, and the contact for one of the color channels is not stable.

Yes, you need to put the file somewhere like susepaste.org and link to it

  • we don’t have storage for attachments in these forums.

Interesting - glad to hear you solved it! It did sound exactly like what
you described there - that’s what my thought was. I had a laptop once
that exhibited that same behaviour, and it was a lose connection (hence
my thinking that was something to look at).

Hi,

Interesting - glad to hear you solved it!

Thanks.

I didn`t think that the solution would be this simple though. From the problems that I had before, I always had to write a ton of codes into the terminal, so at least this was a simple one.
Fortunately I can start using Tumbleweed again :D.

Thank you for your help,
