Codecs opi or distrobox?

Hello everyone
How do I install codecs correctly?
The website says that OPI can break the system.
Use flatpak or distrobox
How do I install via distrobox without breaking the system?

What codecs do you need? Most users don’t need anything beyond the default install these days.
Specific needs may need a few packages from Packman, if you tell which players you use and which formats don’t play we may be able to give detailed directions.
There are also several threads about that in the Forums.

Everything plays, but there’s a bug: when I rewind or fast-forward the video, playback stops. Mainly Reddit

So apparently you met with this issue if you are using Firefox.
I don’t think it is a bug strictly speaking and anyway it is not a codec problem.
If you see the same problem on downloaded files maybe your issue is different.

Thank you. There are no problems with the downloaded files. I just checked, but only when playing in Firefox.

Installing in distrobox by definition won’t break the system. Distrobox uses containerized Linux distributions, so anything at the “system” level inside it isn’t going to affect the host system.

It does share a home directory with you, so that’s something to be aware of - deleting files in your home directory in the distrobox container will remove those files from the host, because they’re mapped.

opi can break the system if you try to use it to install just anything - particularly from home: repos (which are unvetted and the quality can vary because the packages may have been built for a specific purpose or haven’t been updated in a while. Think of the home: projects as peoples’ personal playgrounds; unless you know the person and their intent, don’t use the software you find in their space.

Myself, I still just use the packman packages. That has worked well enough for my purposes.
