Codec

Hi all

I’m new to Linux and am running, with some success, opensuse 11.1. My first (of many) problems is that I cannot get dvd playback in either vlc or mplayer. A related issue is that I cannot play back audio cd’s either.

I installed vlc using the 1 click install method which was very straightforward, I’m looking for something similar with the codecs for either of the above players

Thanks in advance

Dave

Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide - openSUSE Forums

*Pay close attention. You need to disable the VLC repo which has been added with the Oneclick.
*
Search for each package in the list and mark to add. The key is to then do Update all unconditionally in Packman. Follow the guide.

Problem. Come back. Someone will be about.

Hi Mod

you’ll need to break that down a bit, like I said, I’m new:\

First then post the result of this from a terminal type:

zypper lr --details

post the output here

sorry for the delay

here we go

2 things I need to know

  1. what does the above mean

  2. how do I learn what it means

I spent a long time in the depths of windows, are any of the bits of information “the same as such and such” for example

Thanks for taking the time to help, much appreciated

Dave

The info you posted is the list of repositories you have. They are places where your system goes to download software. In windows you have to look for and download software from all sorts of places, some of it may be freeware. But it’s very different in Linux. You will very seldom download packages to install, but rather install it from Yast - Software Management.

The repo’s you have are well known and trusted, add others sparingly. Ideally all you need enabled is OSS, NON-OSS, UPDATES, PACKMAN. The first three are official SUSE repo’s, packman is external but certainly trusted.

The guide I gave you about multi-media should explain about VLC Videolan repo, you need to add libdvdcss from there but that’s all, then you need to disable that repo.
See this about repo management:
Repository Management - openSUSE Forums

Ideally then as it looks like you have added libdvdcss already, you should disable repo #1 and #2 they are both the same really.
Go to Yast Software - Repositories and uncheck the enable and refresh boxes for those 2 repo’s.

zypper info can be found here: Zypper/Usage/11.1 - openSUSE

these are the repositories you get software from. You should get rid of the Videolan one (can do it the easy way in YasT -> Software Repositories)

then install mplayer / vlc from the Packman repository

also you can get rid of the debug repository, you don’t need that for normal usage and the CD repo. In addition, you seem to have duplicate repos, you may want to sort these out

ditto to microchip8

your repos should be this:

3 | Packman Repository | Packman Repository | Yes | Yes | 99 | rpm-md | Index of /pub/packman/suse/11.1 |
5 | openSUSE-11.1-Non-Oss | openSUSE-11.1-Non-Oss | Yes | Yes | 99 | yast2 | Index of /distribution/11.1/repo/non-oss |
6 | openSUSE-11.1-Oss | openSUSE-11.1-Oss | Yes | Yes | 99 | yast2 | Index of /distribution/11.1/repo/oss |
11 | repo-update | openSUSE-11.1-Update | Yes | Yes | 20 | rpm-md | Index of /update/11.1 |

sorted, what a simple to use interface

thanks for everyone’s help, the repo’s require tidying but I can work through that, should I only have the 4 listed above? How does one delete a repo?

I’ve deleted amorak and found that kaffiene will play both cd’s and dvd’s now, so thats the initial problem sorted

Does kaffiene have any limitations or is it more than capable of holding it’s own?

Like I said I’m new to Linux but even considering this there is NO WAY I’m going back (wards) to Windows

Thanks again, good job:)

Dave

kaffiene, mplayer, smplayer
all very similar but will play most things.

amarok however is in my opinion much better a a music media center.
Flash, k3b, Amarok - Install Guide - openSUSE Forums

next prob

how do I enable kaffiene to allow me to rip cd’s into mp3 format, at the moment it will only save them as ogg files

please post your reply so a newbie can understand them please:shame:

Cheers

Dave

Use k3b or jripper
see the relevant section here for k3b and k3b-codecs
Flash, k3b, Amarok - Install Guide - openSUSE Forums

jripper is from Packman too.

I have issues with cd and dvd playback again. After trying (unsuccessfully) to install the cube desktop I had to do a repair installation. Since then I have the following results from zypper

Please use this guide to help you manage your repos: Repository Management - openSUSE Forums

Now you need to remove from the list you posted #1, #2,
That should do.

Now go to Yast Software Management and filter by repo and select Packman and do Update all in this list unconditionally. Some help pages here:
Yast - Software Management -Update All_HowTo - openSUSE Forums

*If you get errors, you need to look for the option for Vendor Change to Packman.

tried that and ended up with this
