CMS products - possibly a rethink needed for the openSUSE Repositories

Given that, I, personally «for whatever reason», have missed a major shift in the way the Content Management System (CMS) world is currently operating – with AI – do we need to reconsider our CMS package offerings in the openSUSE Repositories?

  • Drupal recently disappeared from the openSUSE Repositories – without an announcement or notification.
    Drupal.org no longer offers Linux packages.
    Either, one installs the CMS Launcher to setup a trial site or, one uses DDEV to setup for local development.
    Then, you transfer your Drupal generated Web Site to a hosting provider.
  • WordPress now requires a registration and a monthly fee.
    The WordPress Studio Linux package is currently only available as a .deb package …
  • Joomla 6.1.1 seems to be a case of “Download the .zip file; unpack it; move everything to your web server’s document root.”
  • TYPO3 seems to be the same as Drupal → use DDEV and Composer to setup for local development.

The CMS World has moved on – there’s some use of AI to generate Web Site Content – the CMS product developers seem to be moving away from small local copies of their systems.

SUSE supports a CMS such as Drupal in a Container on Web Server systems.

Therefore, does it really make any sense at all to offer CMS packages in the openSUSE Repositories?

even before the advent of AI, to me, all these were simple CMS “scripts” that you’d install manually on a webserver. I would have never considered installing a wordpress / joomla / drupal / phpbb etc. package from an OS repository, these things run standalone.

that being said, I just searched for all of the ones mentioned and the standard opensuse tumbleweed repos don’t have them, so which offer are you talking about?

Don, I get your point. Don’t have a proper answer to it, aside from the point that this should not be a discussion here, rather on the Factory ML.

Good point – I was simply testing the temperature due to a previous Post asking “What happened to Drupal?” …
I’ve now registered with the Mailing Lists – will continue this discussion there.

They’re in «/were in» the “PHP:Applications” Repository – <PHP libraries and applications>

So they are in the semi-official repos, likely not pushed to Factory for the reasons you already mentioned, yet available for people that build containers etc from openSUSE packages. ( that came to mind later )

Use distrobox for the deb file? They have a free version on their website with registration?
