Clear Type Fonts

Not sure if I am in the right place but, I have seen articles about installing vista fonts, and after hours of searching I can not figure out how anyone has accomplished that. Is there truly a way to install the “clear type” or “vista fonts” (calibri etc.)?

Hi
You don’t say what desktop environment your using? If you create a
folder in your home directory.


mkdir ~/.fonts
cp somefont.ttf ~/.fonts
fc-cache -f ~/.fonts

If your wanting them system wide, there should be a GUI to add them
to /usr/share/fonts/truetype and run the fc-cache.

Thank you for the quick reply! I am running 12.2 KDE desktop. I’m clueless as how to do this. Do I need to download the fonts? If so, where would i get them?

Hi
If you have a windows install on your system you can copy them over
into the relevant directory.

I use GNOME, but I’m sure in the KDE system settings there is a way to
add them.

There are some you can download and install via the fetchmsttfonts
package (you need to install via YaST and let the helper script run).

Any others you need to manually locate and install. If they are in exe
files you can use the command line program cabextract to get them.

Thank you for your response. I do not have a windows partition on my hard drive, just suse lol!. I’m not quite sure where to get the clear type fonts from, I have true type installed via yast. I’m not knowledgeable enough with opensuse or any linux to take fonts from a windows cd or install exe fonts.

As @malcolmlewis said, there is a package you can add in Software Manager called fetchmsttfonts
That will fetch the most common fonts. But honestly, it squat difference.

What exactly are you trying to achieve ?

Since you use KDE you can use the Configure Desktop >System Administration>Font Management OR
you can use this link:
http://thelinuxbox.org/downloads/fonts/msttcorefonts.tar.gz

You’ll get a thing we call a tarball. You can move it like you used to do in Windows to a new folder(call it My Fonts) you create in your /home.
Once in there rclick the tarball select Extract then select Extract Archive Here
The next thing is you’ll see a folder called msttcorefonts
Open msttcorefonts then you can rclick on any .ttf files that you see there select Open with Kfontview
You’ll get a box with a sample of the font if you like it click Install if you don’t close the Fontviewer & move on to the next font.
Installation you’ll get when you see it, it’s that intuitive.
One more thing if you click System in the Font Manager you’ll be asked for your root password twice it’s OK it does that.

The idea was to get the fonts such as calibri etc. for use in libreoffice. Its not a huge deal to me, just thought they would be nice to have:)
