pity you let her pay for all that expensive software and you don’t seem
to know what you are doing…i believe you need a Mac Guru to help, and
there are not so many of those here…

there have been many posts here in the last few years by folks with
various forms of Mac hardware…some seem to have good luck, some
don’t…unfortunately they don’t seem to hang out long enough to write
up a “How to install openSUSE on a Mac”

so, while you wait for a Mac Guru to happen along, you could read some
here:

http://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Aopensuse.org+“install+on+Mac”

i was wrong, sometimes they do…see, for example
http://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php?t=464065

and, there may turn up many others in the two google searches i gave you…

on a personal note (just because i am a “nice guy”): having had a girl
friend i suggest you make sure you know what you are doing and can be
totally successful with your manipulation of her software bits and
bytes…otherwise you are likely to see her door from the outside only.

I’ve read all of that my problem was that osx couldn’t partition the drive. I fixed it by repairing the drive with the osx disc.

My first post here. Pardon my crummy English.

Just installed OPENSuse on a Macbook successfully. (Erasing OS X completely)

Tried several times in several ways to install, initially thought it was a no-go because it left me with a non-bootable disk…

. Looks like the best (easiest, failsafest) way to do it is to do it via a livedisk while connected wired instead of through WIFI, because it looks like the mac WIFI driver isn’t on the iso, so during install you miss out on updates et c. Apparently it downloads drivers for the wifi adaptor.

And indeed, if you install and eject the disk, it does not boot the first time. (I actually have to do a hard shutoff, at the end of install, rebooting just hangs )

Solution? insert the disk during startup (press ‘alt’ during startup to let the mac be able to choose the DVD if it doesn’t work otherwise.

You then get the startup via the DVD, but you select to boot from the HD (or GRUB, darn if forgot already  )

Next time it works.

Overall (little time to test everything) OPENSuse feelsmuch better than Ubuntu, ubuntu seemingly working better ‘out of the box’ but leading to oodles of frustration after even half an hour trying thing out

Still some niggles sound: too low and scratchy by default (solved)
And hiccups, freezes for no apparent reason.

But OPENSuse is here to stay on my machine

Opps EDIT: the installer formats your disk w/o any problem.

openSUSE®, the “German Engineered Automobiles” of operating systems!

Thank you.

I just noticed I wrote OPENSuse instead of openSUSE, grin. I’m all for the open aspect of software, one can clearly see

I should’ve documented the install a bit more thoroughly, I wanted to see how easy it would be for non-tinkerers with a modicum amount of patience and perseverance. But in the end I rushed through it (the cable modem is located in a pretty cold place, Ethernet cable too short to run inside the house  )

(It passed the test  )
