Clamav not running after installation

Hi

I have installed Clamav using the install/remove software utility but it doesn’t show up in the Applications menu. I tired to run it from usr/bin folder but still no go. Any Solutions?

Hi
You need to setup the service to run and run freshclam as root user to update, then run clamscan from the command line. You need to install a GUI for a menu item to appear, eg clamtk;

You don’t say what version of openSUSE, for 11.4;

It is a command line utility. No menu.

that question was answered by Malcolm…

if you don’t know that Clamav won’t be in your menu, and you don’t know
what to put on the command line, i have to wonder why you want to run
it…that is, is this on a machine running a mail server used to
distribute mail to windows users ??

oh, i just looked and see you have posted only 3 notes here -=welcome=-
new poster, and i suspect new linux user

if yours is a stand alone linux desktop system there is no reason to
load any virus protector…

if you dual boot to windows you will need to keep all the defenses up
there, but relax when booted to linux (but, you MUST follow some
security rules like never browse as root, download from trusted sources,
keep your firewall up, use strong passwords and others…but AV,
nope…no need…is a waste of CPU cycles to protect linux)

Depends on what you want to do. There is a manual. Basically, you give it
the path or file you want to scan.

What do you want to scan and what for? In linux, antiviruses are used to
scan shared resources with windows machines, to protect those windows
machines. For example, on a samba server on the shared directories. Another
use is in a mail server to scan email that is going to windows users.

They are not used to scan linux itself.

I have decided to go with Avast instead. Works like a Charm. Probably don’t need an anti virus for linux anyway.
