Good news for openSUSE users that like the Cinnamon desktop found in Linux Mint: Cyberorg (User:Cyberorg - openSUSE) has created openSUSE repo`s for version 12.1, Factory and Tumbleweed of the Cinnamon desktop. A tutorial on how to install it is available here openSUSE:GNOME Cinnamon - openSUSE. Current version is 1.1.3; hope to see 1.2 soon.
I created this topic to get some attention on this subject since Cinnamon looks like really promising and openSUSE could use another option among the other desktop options currently available. Personally i propose that users interested in this should install this desktop in a virtual machine, test it and provide feedback here in order for the developer to improve it.
Todayās morning I asked on #opensuse-gnome if someone was doing Cinnamon, and no one knew for sureā¦ so I did packaged the 1.2 version, fixed a few things and moved it to a repoā¦ Later I found out that someone had been working on it beforeā¦ so I canāt push my Cinnamon stuff to openSUSE:Factory neither I can use the GNOME:Cinnamon repo until we sort this and I can contact the other maintainer.
Iām running 1.2 (local builds) and waiting for the testing repo to finish the publishing (waiting all day, for almost 10 hours, OBS slow today). Once itās doneā¦ people can test it and report bugs to me (#opensuse-gnome on freenode, or by mail nmarques_AT_fedoraproject_org).
While searching OBS i did found that you Ketheriel have done a Cinnamon repo too(kinky ). I hope that someone gets in touch with Cyberorg so both of you can work at Cinnamon to push at least in Factory. I will give 1.2 a try in Vbox in report back in a few days
Iāve spoke with Cyberorg already and Iām moving onwards with Cinnamon, so expect a clean release soon from an official GNOME repository and thereās a huge shot it will become integrated with openSUSE:Factory soonā¦
I will file also a request for a āCinnamonā spin (to which I hope to deploy something ānewā).
openSUSE Build Service (OBS) user āedvedā has also packed some Cinnamon (ācinā) packages like this package=cin . Maybe he would be also interested to work on this subproject/spin?
And on openSUSE Lizards: Cinnamon on openSUSE is also an article from the 29th of December 2011 by Jigish Gohil with a link to the OBS home repository of cyberorg.
There is also an article on the en.opensuse wiki : openSUSE:GNOME Cinnamon - openSUSE (edited until now on the 8th and 10th of January 2010 by cyberorg).
So, there are several forks? Thatās too many, there is no chance we can get
them all. Best thing would be to concentrate on the best option and perfect it.

Cinnamon was submitted for openSUSE:Factory today (expect it on openSUSE 12.2);
Cinnamon will become a part of openSUSE Tumbleweed (thanks to Greg KH who is always on top of things);
Cinnamon has itās own official development repository, GNOME:Cinnamon
As a private joke, Iāve decided to add something special to it (hopefully can be used by GNOME, LXDE and friends also)ā¦ Iāve forked Mintās Welcome screen and I am in the process of creating ātirpitzā (after the Bismark class battleship, Tirpitz, one of the weapons with highest fear factor during WW2). Itās not usable, but itās being worked onā¦
I am not sure that this joke will be received always well or in the intended way -
compare for example the political attitude of Alfred von Tirpitz on Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
@ketheriel: please know that I value your contributions highly. But also, please take back this āprivate jokeā. Naming packages/projects after weapons of destruction IMHO is against all principles of open source, against the whole idea behind FOSS. Thereās billions of names that would not hurt anyone on this earth, this one definitely will. So please, please, please think it over and change the projectās name to something harmless for the rest of the world.
One fork is Unity from Ubuntu and Cinnamon is the second from Linux Mint. I suggest we stick to Cinnamon it looks more promising according to the desktop`s site.
Unity is indeed a fork of Gnome 3??? I did not realize that. But, are there any OTHER forks we may not be aware of?
Also, I for one love the welcome screen fork idea of ketheriel and welcome it with open arms. I donāt see what the fuss was about though, I donāt know that offending name and have never heard it, let alone would I care if I had done a background on him before posting this. He must be worth my reading time if hes such a bad guy? Or would using that name take too much attention away from the evils he has doneā¦
You have a valid point though. Itās like saying ālook how much better we areā and taking credit away from the original writers/designers. In the same way that such distros normally doing by claiming āthey wroteā and giving the idea that they are the sole creators of such software, such as Mint is doing with the fork, and deepin is doing with a lot of ātheirā extensions to say the least. Something to think about when not giving credit, removing comments and copyrights, and then claiming that the work is of your creation.
