Chromium repository version lagging behind?

OpenSUSE Tumbleweed. If you install Chromium repository version (“sudo zypper install chromium”), you get the version 140.0.7339.127.
If you install the flatpak-version instead (with e.g. Discover Software Center which gives you the option to install either the flatpak or repository version), it is 140.0.7339.185.
Is the repository version just lagging behind (but still maintained), and how often is it updated?
I am unsure how old that .127 version is (I hope not several months), but this is a bit crucial thing now because Google had just this week released a hotfix for Chrome that fixes a critical 0-day exploit. It is fixed in 140.0.7339.185.
EDIT: According to Gemini AI, “Chromium version 140.0.7339.127 was released on September 9, 2025”. So, about two weeks old version, not months.

Here is more information about the Chrome hotfix:

Where a browser is installed from can be a personal preference. Us, personally, we prefer to have the most current version as soon as the vendor has released it.

We use Brave for majority of browsing, and use Chrome for personal use. For both Brave and Chrome, we have added the their native repos … so whenever we run a “zypper up” (we use Leap, not TW), we will get the latest version just released.

If you’re using an “openSUSE branded” version of a browser (like Firefox or Chromium) , then your version will be slightly behind the native version (from my past experience).

Are you using Chromium or Google Chrome?
With a quick googling, I didn’t find how to add the native repo of at least Chromium to Tumbleweed. I originally went by what most (new) people do, went to e.g. Discover and searched either for Chrome or Chromium (I think I did the latter because I always felt Chromium is the default “Chrome-like” browser for Linux), and installed whatever it offers. In my case it offered e.g. Chromium both as the OpenSUSE repo version, and the Flatpak version.

I think I will check out of curiosity when the “OpenSUSE branded” version updates to the .185 version which is quite critical apparently, does it take several weeks or how long… In cases like this browsers need the latest updates fast.

As all packages, which are provided for openSUSE distributions, have to undergo QA, it may take some hours to days until a package passed the tests. Afterwards it shows up in the official repos.

As all packages are built in so called devel projects, you can download the newest version from it. Here is the openSUSE Chromium devel repo with the latest Chromium version chromium-140.0.7339.185-2.1.x86_64

https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/network:/chromium/openSUSE_Tumbleweed/

You can simply add the repo via

sudo zypper ar -f https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/network:/chromium/openSUSE_Tumbleweed/ Chromium

Afterwards:

sudo zypper dup --from Chromium

As the build for Factory fails/failed, there is a small delay to push it into the final repo.

  1. We use Google Chrome. Used Chromium years ago, but switched because Chrome offers more features and prefer its “backing”.
  2. My opinion … installing the Flatpak version is a fast and and easy way to install and update software - we have numerous apps installed via Flatpak (using Discover).

You wrote: “… searched either for Chrome or Chromium (I think I did the latter because I always felt Chromium is the default “Chrome-like” browser for Linux) …”. Keep in mind, Google Chrome is based on Chromium (as many other browsers are). Why we also use Brave - it’s based on Chromium, but its UI functionality is very similar to Chrome, plus offers great privacy | blocking as default.

We are aware of this issue along with the build failures on openSUSE Tumbleweed. See boo#1249999. We could not solve this so far, maybe soon we have a bit more time to spend on this.

Chromium package (not snap) for Ubuntu is on 140.0.7339.127, so it is in no way unique to the openSUSE.

That’s interesting because I checked Chromium on my other laptop with Linux Mint, and it was already the newest .185. Mint is based on Ubuntu.

I don’t recall for sure how I installed Chromium on it though. At least it wasn’t a snap (because Mint is not a fan of snap). but maybe I did use an extra repo for Chromium on Mint, possibly Chromium wasn’t even available for it otherwise…

Anyway, I guess I will wait and just be careful using Chromium on OpenSUSE for now, using mostly Firefox instead and not visiting hazy sites with Chromium. Or alternatively use the extra (development?) repo suggested in the solution.

network:chromium is at 140.0.7339.185 for Tumbleweed and will go to 140.0.7339.208 soon. Tumbleweed proper will get 140.0.7339.208 in an upcoming snapshot.

I can confirm that today the updated Chromium version came with the update.
